Life & Work with Amanda Zuschin of Highland Square, Akron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Zuschin

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I always had a camera in my hand. From my grandparents’ polaroid camera, to disposable film cameras, to digital cameras & camcorders, to smartphones, and finally, my Canon DSLR. I always wanted to be behind the camera’ it was my happy and safe place. In highschool, I had the opportunity to take a Visual Design & Imaging class at a career center where I learned about filmmaking, photography, and graphic design. I continued on that path in college and got my degree in Digital Media Production (Film), but I took a handful of photography courses as well. I just recently decided to start throwing myself back into photography, starting with builing an Instagram following and going to local art classes & vendor events.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I struggle with mental illness and ADHD, which makes it difficult to stay consistent and motivated. It also means I’m not great at being my own boss, so I have to try very very hard to get certain things done. However, It’s a part of me and my work, so I’m learning to embrace and channel it as much as I can.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I conisider myself a digital photographer with a focus on nature, macro, and architecture/city life. I love capturing the small and overlooked details of the world. Some of my favorite subjects are insects – they’re way more beatiful and interesting than most people give them credit for! Another thing is that I don’t go out looking for action shots; I’m looking for the hidden gems in stillness.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
When I was younger, I was very shy and academic. I would’ve rather gone to a museum than a “fun kid event”. On the other hand, I have always been very into computers and video games. In highschool I was very into marching band – I played the flute. No matter what age or where I was, I probably had a camera with me!
