Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Maddie Coppel of Toledo

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Maddie Coppel. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Maddie, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that brings me joy is reading! I used to feel like reading was the last thing I wanted to do after a long day of writing and reading proofs, but it’s been a good escape lately.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maddie Coppel and I am the food editor at The Blade newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, In this role, I write recipe-based food stories and interview area chefs, farmers, and home cooks to add a local perspective to each piece. I also film a monthly video series called “Meals with Maddie” where I prepare a meal with a Northwest Ohio chef!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father, Steve Coppel, has taught me the most about hard work. As a family business owner, he shows resilience and power while stile being humble and doing honest work.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of what others think about me. Once I gave this up, I gained a new perspective and became more confident in myself and in my work.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Intentionality is a quality that matters to me in both my work and personal life, and my closest friends know this about me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely what I was born to do. I’ve had a passion for food and sustainability for well over a decade. Despite the challenges in the industry, it’s always the career path I’ve wanted to go down.
