Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Macy Jacob of Toledo & Columbus

We recently had the chance to connect with Macy Jacob and have shared our conversation below.

Macy, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes, very glad. In recent years, especially during the pandemic, I was forced to slow down. I didn’t realize, though, that taking time for myself and discovering my true passions was the drive that I needed all along.
I think the idea of the chase, chasing your dreams, is a great mindset. I also think it can lead to frustration, feeling like a failure, and burnout. When the grind doesn’t stop, you never get to take a step back and make sure that what you’re working so hard at actually aligns with your true goals. That’s how I felt, before I gave myself a second to breathe.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Macy Jacob, I’m an actor and producer from Toledo, OH. I started, like many other young actors, in a class with a big dream. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about the industry and even more about myself, and discovered what I’m really passionate about. What truly drives me is storytelling and compelling characters that reflect reality.
To bring these stories to life, my friend Elle Birdsell and I started a production company, BRIGHTMOSS. Here, we aim to tell stories from a female perspective – written by, shot by, and performed by women.
Our latest project, a short film called “Soul~Mates”, was completed by an entirely female and queer cast and crew. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of this industry and give these amazingly talented artists a place to shine.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Coming from a small town, I had no idea how big the world was. Things changed for me when I went to Los Angeles for an acting trip. I saw so many other young actors just like me, eager to make their mark.
This was hard to come to terms with.
But I realized there was a freedom to that. And that I could embrace what made me unique without being afraid.
Since then, I have been working to express myself freely, knowing there’s no one out there just like me.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Like many people, I struggle with a fear of failure.
Everyone will say that the film industry is so hard to get into, you better have a fall back. This made me afraid of failing before I even began, and question my choices at every turn.
Now, of course, I’ve decided it’s worth a shot. Because even if I do fail, at least I tried.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
One thing I’ve learned in recent years is the importance of being realistic. I love to dream big and imagine myself with an Oscar one day, but that’s not my goal anymore.
When I first began acting, I had lots of dreams – I still do. But those dreams have changed and shifted to become real, tangible things.
By being realistic about my future, I can focus on what’s next and how I’m going to get myself there.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I try to be the best person I can be every day. Even though I fail, a lot.
And I will always audition for the lead, but I’d also be happy with one line. I’d be happy to even be on set as the assistant to the person that gets coffee. I’ll be the best at that as I can.
It’s nice to be recognized, but it’s not the reason I try.
