Kate Church’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kate Church. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Kate, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am definitely wandering. While I never have intentionally strayed from a path, some of the most interesting adventures have found me when I’ve lost my way and it has been in those adventures that I continue to thrive.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kate Church. I’m a seasoned healthcare worker by day, lover of nature, avid reader and writer by night. I spend my free time hitting the trails and engrossing myself in the world of fantasy fiction. Armed with a love of folklore and medieval history, I strive to create worlds with strong ties to both and strive to push the boundaries of what we know fantasy fiction to be.

My debut novel “A Breath Before Drowning” was published on 9/30/2020. Followed by second novel “Seeking the Wolf” published on 11/10/2022 with book two in The Chronicles of Caladh trilogy entitled “Lifting the Veil” published on 7/23/2023. My debut children’s book “Splat the Dinosaur”, which I co-authored with my son, Zac Church, was published 9/18/2023. Its sequel is due to be published in November of 2025 along with five more planned works to come.

These days I can be found at local primary schools, libraries and bookshops telling the tale of “Splat the Dinosaur” with Zac, and how his voice has helped bring awareness and acceptance for those on the spectrum.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The one I had with myself. If you make a habit of talking down to yourself then overtime you will begin to believe your own words and then it will take that much more for you to believe you’re making progress. It was in learning to be kind to myself and forgiving myself for being human that I found helped the most. While I know I’m still learning and growing as a person, it is in the relationship I have with myself that I find is still the most important.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I wouldn’t say suffering as much as I would say my failures. Failure has taught me how much my goals mean to me and what paths do not work for me. I tend to pride myself in my failures because for each success there is probably at least a half a dozen failures or more that had to occur for that success to happen. Learn to appreciate the journey.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Of course! I’ve spent a lot of time learning about myself as a person and choosing the person I wanted to be. So, there really isn’t any benefit to cover that person up. There will always be people who are not going to like me or understand me, but the ones that will or the ones that need my inspiration are worth being myself for.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I may have been misunderstood the majority of my life, but I did the best I could with the tools I had. I had a compassion for animals that was limitless and took the greatest comfort in being surrounded by nature.
