Inspiring Conversations with Shannon Weisbrod of Marigold on Main

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Weisbrod.

Hi Shannon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a young girl, I was creative. I was always making or creating, on paper or with materials. I would decorate my bedroom, hang outfits on my curtain rods and accessorize my curtains like a retail store. I earned my undergrad degree in Business Management and proceeded with a career in sales. I sold material handling equipment for Toyota Sales to the manufacturing industry. I then pivoted to direct sales and built a jewelry sales team where most of my experience was in leadership development as well as achieving my own local, regional, and national sales goals. I learned during this time that you always have to have a “Why” bigger than any adversity and a paycheck. Passion and Diligence is what drives success. I also believe that we are created with the gifts that we are good at and the things we excel in. What brings us joy as children are the gifts we are meant to use in our adult work life. All of my work-life experiences have steered me right back to the interests I had as a child and I am so thankful for the opportunity to finally do what I was created to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh yes! It was a piece of cake! No, not at all, but the challenges are the reason I have so much gratitude now for the opportunity. I have faced proving my competence as a young female in a predominantly male industry. I had to educate myself on personality types and what motivates people to build a strong leadership team. I had to wear so many hats as a wife and mother of three daughters. In order to be a successful leader, I had to lead by example with my personal business and productivity. Others are empowered when they see their leadership set and achieve personal goals. I’ve always had the entrepreneurial mindset and growing a business is hard. For me, work-life balance has been one of my greatest challenges because when I decide to do something, I do it with all my heart and mind to the last detail. This trait is an asset when everything is going well but it can also be a detriment emotionally when challenges arise. Letting negative emotions go and taking each day one day at a time is a lesson it took me a long time to learn.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Marigold on Main is a unique specialty brick-and-mortar experience of comfort and joy that includes home decor products, cozy apparel, local artisans, and gifts. I believe in creating a happy home, hard work, and in small business. I have a hopeful desire to be part of a movement to bring back our brick-and-mortar shops and local personal shopping. There’s that “Why”! I am from a small town, and I live in a small-town Columbus suburb. All across the country, we have beautiful architectural buildings and small-town businesses that didn’t survive the arrival of the internet and online shopping. As a child, I remember the local women’s clothing store, shoe store, the Ben Franklin, and sidewalk sales. I don’t believe I’m alone when I say I think people are craving small local brick-and-mortar shopping. It creates a special experience when you can walk Main Street and shop small business. The product brands I work so diligently to find are not on major online shopping platforms, they are small-batch, social good, affordable quality trending brands. I have also given some of our retail floor space to local makers for their hand-made gifts. This gives them an avenue for sales without the overhead, and it creates traffic for Marigold on Main. I believe in teamwork, preserving our small-town architecture, and investing back in the communities we live. I am so proud of the community for their overwhelming support by shopping small, sharing the store on social media, and spreading the word to shop local with such genuine intentions.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am truly an introvert! I struggle consistently with social anxiety. My “Why”, my passion, and work ethics allow me to persevere with my goals, but there have been times in my life when anxiety was quite literally debilitating. It can make you sick, and it can interfere in your entire work and life experiences. This is why I believe so strongly in working for a purpose you love and finding some gratitude in the hard things. I do have gratitude for this part of my personality because it has played a great part in the path that has brought me to today and the chance I took to pursue Marigold on Main. I have made a choice to not let it define me and what I am capable of. Though, I still need a long nap after a busy social week at the shop!
