Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Maloney.
Hi Scott, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey to being the owner of a bicycle dealership started a long time ago as a boy who used to pull bikes from the trash to take them apart and put them together again to understand how they worked. I got my first job as a bike mechanic when I was 12 and worked in three different bike shops for about 12 years until my early 20’s. Coming out of college with a major in business, it seemed that everyone expected you to go get a job in a big company, so I did, starting at Society Bank and working in financial services for about 20 years, followed by IT consulting for almost 10 years after that. The work paid the bills, but I decided for remainder of time I would be working through retirement, I wanted to be doing something that I truly enjoy and that would drive my creativity and my passion for helping others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I will say I was surprised the process to acquire Century Cycles turned out to take a little longer and be a little more complicated than I anticipated, but we (with my wife and our co-owner Joshua Ronschke) persevered and are thrilled to be the new owners of a very highly regarded business in cycling circles in Northeast Ohio and beyond.
We’ve been impressed with Century Cycles, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Century Cycles has been in business for 30 years serving the needs of cyclists of all ages, and across all bike sub-cultures. We have a broad selection of new bicycles for purchase. We have a full spectrum of parts and accessories to meet a cyclist’s every need beyond the bike purchase.
We have a well-trained service staff that can cover the entire spectrum of maintenance from fixing a flat tire all the way to complete bike teardowns and rebuilds where we clean, lubricate, and reassemble the complete bike repairing anything that needs attention during the process.
We also offer bike rentals where we have thousands of riders taking advantage of the Cleveland Metroparks and the Ohio and Erie Canalway Towpath Trail every season.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We consider Century Cycles to be more than just a store that sells bikes, we also pride ourselves in the time and energy we devote to the communities we serve. We have run an award-winning program for years called the Bike to School Challenge that encourages children to ride a bike to school as a form of exercise. We host group rides throughout the year for different audiences to provide formal opportunities for cyclists to meet others who share their interests or passion for the sport. We also lend support to a range of charitable causes throughout the region when they have a cycling component to the event to provide manpower, or to donate items that can be auctioned off to help raise funds for their cause.
