Inspiring Conversations with Sarah Bickel of Sunny Sips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Bickel.

Hi Sarah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 2017 I went to a food truck festival and left with the crazy idea of starting a food truck. That evening I hopped on Craigslist and the next day found myself on my way to Monroe Michigan, where I purchased my cute vintage camper. A lot happened since that day, I was studying business at the Ohio State University, working two jobs so I could graduate debt free. Meanwhile, my dream of renovating my ‘50’s camper into a smoothie camper got put on the back burner. By 2020, I had graduated and was working from home but ready for change. By summer of 2021, Sunny Sips was born, and just one month later, I took a huge leap and quit my full-time banking job to dedicate 110% of me to my tiny yellow camper. I’ve experienced every emotion possible, but overall, it’s the best job I’ve ever had and totally worth all the obstacles I’ve been faced with as a new small business owner.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every day is a new challenge. One of my biggest obstacles was and still is trying out new locations. I get so nervous on my way to a new location or new festival that I’ve never been to. I don’t know how the day is going to go when I try a new spot, but I have to take my chances and test the waters. Sometimes, I come out disappointed, but every day I learn more and more about what locations are a good fit for my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Real fruit smoothies and iced coffee in a mobile vintage camper.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Owning a food truck is no joke! The day before Sunny Sips opened, I said, “How hard could this be? All I have to do is throw some fruit in a blender.” Not even 24 hours later, I learned it is so much more than that. It’s constantly prepping for the next day, constantly scheduling events, constantly keeping up with social media, and so so much more. It is a lot more behind-the-scenes work than what others may think.
