Inspiring Conversations with Nykara Brown of The Conscious Mind

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nykara Brown.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Conscious Mind Candles is a small company, based in Columbus, OH started by me after graduating from Graduate School with my Master’s in Biology. The name and concept behind my candles are a direct product of me trying to find ways to maintain and stay on track with my goals in grad school. As an avid candle user with a unique sense of smell, I decided to repurpose my candles to light fire up under myself to reach the goals I had for school like writing papers, saving for trips, and most of all graduating! This creative trick I used to help me reach my goals in school became a force of habit for manifestation that helped me develop my brand idea that birthed The Conscious Mind Candles.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
This was not a smooth journey at all, but it was the motivation I needed to keep working to see the fruits of my labor come to life. The development and execution of my business began at the beginning of 2020 with the help of my brand designer and friend Starr Stone (Instagram: @starrstonedesigns). I was getting ready to relocate from Cincinnati to Columbus to work at Ohio State, following the passing of my grandfather. Amongst the already depleted mental capacity, the COVID-19 emergency lock-down had also just been set. I was challenged to develop The Conscious Mind in the midst of a lockdown, with limited access to resources and people. Despite the odds, I successfully launched in October of 2020. I was in business for about eight months before life hit me again and I was out of work for over three months, forcing me to temporarily close my business. After a six month hiatus from The Conscious Mind, I am focused now more than ever to keep working and refining my brand to be the best it can.

We’ve been impressed with The Conscious Mind, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Conscious Mind is a wellness brand that sells a luxury candle experience centered around goal-reaching. All candles are hand-crafted in Columbus, with luxury coconut apricot wax and high-quality fragrance oils. Connecting luxury to distinct for customers, with the brand’s candle concept focusing on reinforcing intentionality in goal-reaching. Right from the comfort of your own home. Every candle is designed to be dedicated to one of your personal goals. Each hand-picked, luxury, and aromatic scent is intended to be a conscious reminder of the goal, and the lifespan of the candle is meant to serve as a unique timeline to reaching your goal of focus.

Everyone loves candles including me, so creating my own was always fun and enjoyable. What I am most proud of about my candle business, is how I was able to take a unique and small concept that has helped me, to make a product that others can benefit from as well. Using my conscious creativity and wisdom I was able to take a common household item and add my own unique element to market and share with others. This to me, is what makes my brand special, the way I was able to make my own type of candles for The Conscious Mind. You can get candles anywhere, but The Conscious Mind is where you will find candles that are designed to always keep you in mind.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the nature, hidden beauty, potential, opportunities, and creativity within Columbus. I do not like the traffic and potholes!
