

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Subel.
Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I currently own a boutique digital marketing agency based in Columbus, Ohio, and have for the past over 10 years. My journey started before then as I got my first “real” job out of college working for an online gaming company that owned online poker rooms and casinos based in Antigua in the Caribbean. In the early days of digital marketing, these companies were all generating traffic to their site through SEO (search engine optimization) and then utilizing affiliates to help them to attract more traffic to their sites. Affiliates are basically like online salespeople that have websites, and then they would lease space on their websites that would drive traffic to the casinos and poker rooms and then earn a commission from those sales. Those affiliates were all adept at digital marketing and SEO, and my job was to manage those affiliates. So, by default, I started to learn more about digital marketing, and I even went out own my own to start my own website to learn first-hand how to do SEO and other digital marketing strategies. So that’s how I started in the digital marketing space and what led me to where I am today, running a digital marketing agency.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any business owner has a smooth road, and why most people probably don’t start their own businesses. If you like nice stable, job with little fluctuations and consistency, running a business is not the way to go. It’s basically like running a career roller-coaster where you have the best days of your life and the worst days, and those fluctuate so frequently. You have to have thick skin and a strong stomach to weather the hard days and the struggles because there will be many. You are responsible for your success and failure, so there’s not a company to fall back on, it really makes you feel vulnerable, but that’s what I signed up for, I guess.
In terms of struggles, there are always struggles as a business owner. In agency life, it could be that you lost clients that were generating a lot of revenue, and now it’s gone, or perhaps legal challenges/issues, or competitors that defame your reputation, or competitors that outright steal your clients, and any number of other challenges that arise as a business owner. All those things have happened at one time or another for me and you just have to do your best to right the ship and continue to forge ahead with your core values as a business owner (and person), and know that at the end of the day, you are doing the best you can with integrity and the values that you hold important to you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

At the end of the day, there are a lot of digital marketing agencies doing the same thing, but these values help set us apart from others. And one of the big things that I feel separates us is our attention to detail, taking strategies and campaigns to the next level to continue to ask questions and see if there are better ways to do what we are already doing. Pushing the clients to be better as well, so we can be better at helping them.
Any big plans?
Yes, we will continue to expand into various niches that we have developed great processes and results for, to help expand our offerings and services for. We have make great strides in several industries by developing undeniable, real, tangible business results for those companies and will continue to push that with other companies we work with in the future.
On a personal level, doing some international traveling with my 2 sons to expose them to other countries and get them out of their comfort zones. I feel like that’s important for anyone, and certainly my boys as they grow up.
