Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Anderson.
Hi Marissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2006, I stole my older brother’s resume from our family computer and updated it with my information. When I used his template, I received calls and job offers. I was fascinated by the change and how I could recreate it multiple times. So, I started researching resume best practices, and I began creating resumes as a hobby helping friends and family when needed. I always enjoyed writing and creating stories, but resume writing was better because it was real people instead of creative writing.
In October 2017, a co-worker suggested that I should sell resumes on a larger scale because I helped others around me land good jobs. So, that day, I made a post on Facebook offering free resume reviews. I received an overwhelming response from my network, and as of January of 2018, I started offering resume updates and career coaching on social media.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To say the road was smooth, I would be lying. I entered an industry with no credentials, just my knowledge of the market from my corporate experiences and my research on the industry (self-taught). One of the biggest struggles in my business was finding a niche/target market, knowing your price is your price, and being consistent with marketing. Initially, I targeted everyone, but now we are more focused on professionals transitioning to new careers and individuals entering the job market after a work experience gap.
We’ve been impressed with Anderson & Co. Resume Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company Anderson & Co. Resume Services is a consulting firm that helps everyday people improve their lives. We help job seekers who are relocating, changing careers, job-hopping, or the stay-at-home mom ready to go back to work get into a career they want.

What sets us apart from the rest is building relationships with our clients. As the owner, I work directly with every client. We answer all DM’s (direct messages from social platforms) and Emails. Our clients will always talk to humans when they call us, and we make time to speak with our clients when requested. Typical clients use our services at least twice in a two-year period and refer us to family. We pride ourselves on supporting our clients in a full circle manner.

We also like donating our time to the less fortunate community of Central Ohio by providing free resume services to homeless individuals. We have partnered with local shelters (Southeast Inc.) and local group homes and facilitated weekly resume workshops for residents allow our clients to contact us directly for updates.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say I am a risk taker. It was a huge risk starting my business and I didn’t have much prior knowledge about the industry. I betted essential on myself and took the risk of starting a business. Now almost 5 years later, I’m truly thankful I did take the risk. I believe to become successful; you have to accept some form of risk in most things you do. Risk equals financial freedom to me.
