Inspiring Conversations with Kelsey Carpenter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Carpenter.

Hi Kelsey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It was through my physical therapy regime in college that I was first introduced to Pilates.  Who knew an ankle injury would lead me down the path of finding my true passion?

After college, with degrees in Education and Dance, I moved to Columbus and became a private school teacher and group fitness instructor at my sister’s Barre 3 studio in Upper Arlington. After a few years of being in a school setting and teaching fitness on the side, I decided to take a leap of faith and work towards a Pilates certification which is somewhat lengthy and costly.

While working on my certification for a year and completing my required teaching hours, I was able to instruct at various studios and start to build my network.  When the pandemic hit, I taught some virtual classes but was left with plenty of time to soul search and work on my next step.  I knew that eventually, the demand would be there for people to work out in a studio again, so I started looking for available spaces in my ideal area of Upper Arlington. It was not difficult to find the perfect spot, however securing that space for my business took a lot of perseverance.  Checking in periodically with the building manager to convince him that I had a viable business and reaching out to the building owner to explain my vision was all part of the process.  Without those steps, I truly believe that beautiful space would have slipped through my fingers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting the business during the pandemic was the biggest risk.  I had several people question my decision when I started my business plan, but I continued to move forward and my instincts proved to be right.  The business has been steady and growing since the day I opened my doors a little over a year ago. I don’t have a business background; however, both my father and my sister are entrepreneurs and I’ve been able to lean on them as mentors.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Reform Pilates is a boutique studio located in Upper Arlington’s Historic Mallway.  The corner space is almost 1,500 sq ft. with natural light coming in from two sides.  My parents and I painted all the walls and trim together.  My graphic designer happens to be my parent’s next-door neighbor and their other next-door neighbor crafted a customized desk/counter.  I feel invested in the space because of the hard work and details that make it very personal

My co-worker, Kim, and I accommodate individual and small groups with customized workouts through classical and contemporary Pilates.  We pride ourselves on providing modifications and adaptations based on who is attending the class that day.  This makes it suitable for beginners, seasoned clients, people with specific injuries, and those looking for a challenge.  Clients often tell us what a difference they feel in their bodies which is why many attend class up to five times each week.

I would encourage anyone to try a class at Reform.  The equipment can look intimidating but I promise it will be a positive experience and one that you will learn to love.  My goal is to make everyone feel welcomed by making introductions before class.  Many people enjoy seeing familiar faces and interacting with one another, however, once class starts, the chatter stops and I take charge of the class.  We still have fun but we are focused on that mind/body connection for 50 minutes.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks is unsettling for everyone but if you know deep down that it is right, nothing should dissuade you. I don’t believe there are failures in life. Every obstacle you need to overcome is part of the journey and you will learn and grow from it.  I live my life through faith and that has helped me in every situation thus far.
