Inspiring Conversations with Joanna Consiglio of Modern Motion Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Consiglio

Hi Joanna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into chiropractic care began during my college years, where I was very interested health, fitness, and the intricate workings of the human body. Initially, I was on the path towards the traditional medicine and was exploring what route in medicine I wanted to take. It was also during this time that I took up running and set my sights on completing my first marathon.

Like many runners, I faced injuries along the way. It was during one of these setbacks that a friend introduced me to a chiropractor known as the ‘running doctor’. As both a patient and someone passionate about health, I found chiropractic care resonated deeply with my beliefs and interests more than any other field I had considered.

Inspired by my own positive experiences, I enrolled in chiropractic school. As I pursued my studies, my running achievements started to take off—I qualified for the Boston Marathon and was running faster than I ever thought was possible for me. Post-graduation, I gained valuable experience in several clinics, honing my skills and refining my approach to patient care.

However, my journey took an unexpected turn while preparing for the 2023 Boston Marathon when I herniated a disc in my lower back just weeks before the race. This experience, a chiropractor with a “bad back” seemed like a punch line to a joke. I started to see myself go down the same path that many of my patients have experienced. I saw first-hand how debilitating and life-changing pain and injuries can be. Having this injury myself taught me more about the body than 8 years of school could have ever taught me. It allowed me to intimately understand the challenges my patients face—the pain, the setbacks, and the impact on daily life.
It deepened my empathy and provided insights into effective healing strategies. I decided to take everything I learned from my own experience and create my own practice.
My vision was clear: to blend traditional chiropractic techniques with modern, evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual. I wanted to be the kind of doctor who sees patients as unique individuals, crafting personalized treatment plans that prioritize their holistic well-being.

Today, my practice embodies these principles. I am dedicated to not only treating injuries but empowering my patients to achieve optimal health and performance. Every day, I am grateful for the journey that brought me here and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others through chiropractic care.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a mix of highs and challenging lows. Chiropractic school, in particular, was a significant struggle initially. I struggled to align with a singular technique or belief system. Eventually, I realized that instead of trying to fit into a predefined mold, I could create my own approach to chiropractic care. I could create my own style of chiropractic care that may look different from other clinics or what people commonly think of when “going to the chiropractor”.
This realization allowed me to integrate a variety of techniques into my practice, tailoring each treatment to meet the unique needs of my patients.

My personal experience with my lower back injury was another major hurdle- not just for my career, but also my personal life.
It forced me to confront questions about my own recovery and future as a runner. Despite my knowledge, the pain and uncertainty I faced were humbling. I myself went through a period of questioning, “will this ever get better, is this my new normal, will I ever run marathons again, will I ever go back to doing the things I once loved”. Conversations I have with patients on a daily basis, were now conversations I was having to have with myself.
It was also challenging when treatments that typically worked for my patients didn’t always provide the same relief for me. This sparked a deep dive into researching alternative techniques and treatments. This also broadened my understanding of how complex the human body can be, especially when it comes to the perception of pain. Healthcare can not be one-sized-fits-all. What works for one person, may not work for another. As a doctor, It is my job to figure out what is the best option for that person.

Through these challenges, I’ve grown both personally and professionally. They’ve reinforced my commitment to offering holistic, patient-centered care that not only treats injuries but empowers individuals to achieve their health and fitness goals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
