Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Harmon.
Hi Jeffrey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Northern Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, into a loving family with two kind, intelligent, and hard-working younger sisters. I developed an interest in science from a young age, moving through all the classic interests of a young boy, including dinosaurs and space. I attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati followed by Cornell University for college where I studied molecular biology. However, I also developed an interest in business, taking extra classes in addition to my pre-medical requirements.
I knew I wanted to delay attending medical school in pursuit of adventure. I was fortunate enough to be hired at Weill Cornell Medical College in Doha, Qatar where I taught biology and chemistry. This experience afforded me the chance to teach and travel all over the world with a group of people who eventually became some of my best friends. This experience was truly a time of self-actualization, a crystallization of the amalgam of my interests and goals.
I returned to Cincinnati for medical school and residency in head and neck surgery. I then completed subspecialty training in facial plastic surgery in New York City with Andrew Jacono MD, FACS, one of the preeminent facial plastic surgeons in the world. It was there that I learned the most advanced techniques in surgical and non-surgical care of the face, neck, nose, eyes, and hair. It was also where I learned a practice model I would apply to starting my own facial plastic surgery practice. I have since returned to my roots in Cincinnati to found Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery in the heart of Hyde Park Square.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The training process for the specialty of facial plastic surgery is long and arduous, requiring four years of medical school followed by six years of surgical training. This decade involved extensive and repeat testing as well as nights and weekends on call. In addition, I studied business independently, because I knew I would eventually start my own practice. I married and had a son during this period as well, which made balancing these competing interests challenging. It was during this time that I learned how to be efficient with my time while maintaining the focus and attention-to-detail necessary to be a successful surgeon and business owner. The process of founding Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery started with a mission to improve the quality of life of others and a vision to become the premier center for facial plastic surgery in the Midwest. The practical challenges of starting a business include writing a compelling and well-researched business plan, identifying and acquiring financing, identifying the office location and building, guiding the design of the office, overseeing the construction and outfitting of the office, and hiring and training the individuals who identify with our mission, vision, and values. Future challenges will include building a culture that not only attracts clients but also employees who are as passionate and dedicated to Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery as my wife and I are.
As you know, we’re big fans of Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My passion is taking good care of my patients. The team at Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery and I work hard to provide a premier experience for those who we have the privilege to care for, from the initial consult, through surgery, and during their healing.
How do you think about luck?
I believe luck is essential in any business venture to the extent that we are all presented with opportunities that often reflect the family we were born into and the educational opportunities we were provided. I was lucky to have been born to loving parents who could provide me with the educational opportunities I needed to succeed. However, I believe focus, hard work, and planning are required to identify those opportunities and seize them. I also believe that luck factored into my meeting my wife, the love of my life, who is my best friend from medical school’s sister. She is the most kind, generous, supportive, and socially savvy individual I have ever met. She has supported me throughout my medical career in more ways than one and has always been my biggest advocate. She does not allow me to shy away from pursuing my dreams. Her encouragement made the founding of Harmon Facial Plastic Surgery possible. We were also lucky to have the gift of a son. This gift brings continuous joy to our lives and is a constant motivator. I plan to build a practice my wife and son will be proud of.
