Inspiring Conversations with Gabriel Rivera of Architectural Drafting and Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Rivera.

Hi Gabriel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve spent the past 20 years immersed in this industry, building my experience as an employee for engineering and architectural firms as well as contractors. Before I started my own business, I was fortunate to work for a company that was exceptionally proactive and really showed me the value—and possibility—of owning a business myself.

It all began with taking on small side projects related to my profession. Over time, those side jobs kept growing, to the point where they started to surpass my full-time workload. By the time I was laid off, I had already spent nearly a year preparing to transition into my own business, so while the shift was sudden, it was also something I was ready for.

Now, almost four years later, I’m proud of how far the business has come. I’m operating out of an office in Bedford Heights, a space offered by one of my client contractors who believed in my work and wanted to help me grow. With two virtual assistants on board, I’ve been able to expand even more. In May, I also brought on an intern, who has been a great asset and will be with us until August. Once the intern returns to college, my next step is to hire someone full-time to continue strengthening the team and supporting the business’s growth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my business was a huge struggle, especially during the transition. I already had commitments to the company I was working for, and right when my business launched, I also got married and welcomed my son. It was a whirlwind, filled with sleepless nights.

Running a business is financially tough in the beginning, even when there’s a lot of work. I didn’t really understand how the business was doing financially, which made it hard to delegate at first — not out of stubbornness, but simply because I didn’t have the clarity. So I ended up covering all the roles myself while still focusing on the projects, which are the core of what we do.

Eventually, as I got a better handle on the business, I tried to delegate. Now, I’m finally able to hand things off more effectively. Still, back then I was working weekends and completely worn out. I even had to take a week off out of pure exhaustion — I was burned out. Things are better now, though it’s still a journey. At least I have a bit more balance and breathing room than before.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Architectural Drafting and Design?
“I specialize in architectural drafting and design services that bring homeowners’, contractors’, and investors’ visions to life — with precise, code-compliant blueprints essential for permits and construction.

Though I’m not an architect, under Ohio law, single-, two-, and three-family residential projects don’t require one. That means I’m fully authorized to create the detailed drawings needed to secure approvals and start construction.

Clients count on me for plans that cities approve and builders trust — crafted with exceptional accuracy, filled with critical information, and always tailored to meet code. They also value how I truly listen to what they want, guide them on what’s possible, and ensure their projects get off the ground the right way.

From concept through final blueprints, I help set every residential project on a solid foundation — quickly, reliably, and with a quality that keeps clients coming back.”

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I wanted to share some exciting plans I have for the future. This September, I’ll be starting college to work toward obtaining my architectural license. My goal is to expand my knowledge, become a certified architect here in Ohio, and eventually pursue licenses in other states as well.

Long term, I aim to grow into a full architecture firm where we can take on a wide range of projects, including commercial work. I also plan to build partnerships with other architects and engineers to strengthen the firm’s capabilities and offer comprehensive services under one roof.

Additionally, I’ve been seriously considering evolving into a design-build company. That way, we can manage everything from the design process to the construction itself, providing clients with a seamless experience. I’m also interested in investing in real estate down the line, using this combined expertise to develop projects of our own.

I’m really looking forward to these next steps and excited about where this journey can lead.
