Today, we’d like to introduce you to Edsha Jones.
Hi Edsha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve loved hair for as long as I can remember; there was even a time when I was about 5, my dad fell asleep on the couch while he and I were home. All I remember was my mom coming home and getting upset because there was “Blue Magic” grease everywhere. It was all in his hair, my hair, and apparently, I had styled the couch too. 🙂
Although, as a child, I saw a completely different career path for myself, I loved doing hair and was good at it, so I knew I wanted to get my license. Out of over 200 applicants, I was fortunate enough to be one of the 40 selected for the Cosmetology Career Center program for Columbus Public Schools (that’s what it was called back then). 2008 was a life-altering year for me; that year, I lost my mother and graduated from high school. I received my cosmetology license, went away to college, found out I was pregnant while in college, came home, and, by November, started working in the salon as a new stylist. I had just turned 18 at the end of October.
After having my son, I did the big chop and used extensions as a way to grow and protect my hair. This led me to falling in love with extensions, especially for their transformative power. Over the years, I’ve prided myself in being a sponge, always looking for way to grow and improve myself and my craft. I’ve taken tons of classes and have learned from different professionals.
Fast forward to today, I am a luxury extension specialist and educator with a passion for helping women and clients, in general, have the hair experience they truly deserve. The Luxury Hair Lab is a salon where luxury service, education, and personalized care are the bedrock for success. From personalized consultations to the flawless application of top-tier extensions, we redefine luxury, ensuring you leave not just satisfied but truly captivated.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life in general, no, but I’m grateful to say I’ve had great salon experiences working with different women, particularly Black women because I am very aware of the stigmas that are portrayed in our industry around cattiness and jealousy. For a long time, I was the youngest stylist working in different salons, so gratefully, I’ve had older stylists offer me advice and teach me their techniques. I’ve been a part of my current salon home for almost 14 years, and we are more like family than coworkers.
I think the biggest struggles I’ve faced in my career have been coming in recent times as I’ve been working towards scaling my business and stepping out of my comfort zone. Gaining the knowledge and resources to treat my business like the true and thriving business that it is, instead of a “hustle,” has been a journey, as well as exploring different avenues of income. Lately, life’s been teaching me the value of a team when, at one point, I was able to handle the majority of operations on my own.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I love sharing memories from my childhood. 🙂 One of my favorite memories is from a family reunion my family had in 2000 or 2001. I was about 10 or 11 years old. My family is huge, and we’ve had reunions every year I’ve been alive with the exception of the pandemic. That particular year, it seemed like every single member of my family was there and was healthy. I remember my grandpa (who was born in 1910) was there with his siblings, and they were all healthy and fully functioning. My cousins and I went on a fun trail in the woods. I remember feeling happy, safe, eating well, and feeling surrounded by love.
