Inspiring Conversations with Ed Fitzpatrick of Ed’s Concrete Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ed Fitzpatrick

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started concrete at the age of 17. A friends mom was getting her patio poured and I asked if I could help. They hired me at the end of that day. I’ve been working in concrete ever since.

A lot of hard work and persistence is how I got to where I am today. I’ve worked for small companies in the beginning, moved to large commercial companies, and then decided to go off on my own. I’ve started from the very bottom as a laborer and continued to move up the ladder throughout my career, to now owner.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Concrete is very hard work and I’ve wanted to give up many times throughout my career. You have to really love what you do to stay with it.

When I was 27 I got a hernia and wanted to quit then. I decided to take real estate classes but eventually made my way back to my biggest passion of concrete.

Concrete consists of long days and late nights but finishing the project to perfection and making the customer happy makes it all worth it.

The summer days can get hot- working under the 90 degree sun is a struggle in itself.

As a business owner, the struggles come on a daily basis- whether it’s finding the right employees to work for you, the crazy costs of materials, aging equipment, and constantly wanting to grow and be better.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ed’s Concrete is a family owned business owned by myself and my wife, Juliana. We specialize in commercial and residential concrete throughout Columbus and surrounding areas. We do everything from your stamped concrete patios to a 20,000 sqft slab on grade.

I think the thing that sets us most apart would be the relationships we’ve built with our clients and our experience. The phone doesn’t turn off at the end of the day.

I’m most proud of being able to take the trade as far as I have. I grew up with people telling me I’m crazy for wanting to stay in concrete and not get a college degree and with hard work and wanting to prove all those people wrong, I’ve built a business that I’m proud of and that supports my family.

We want the reader to know that with Ed’s Concrete we go the extra mile to make sure the client is happy. We don’t cut corners, we offer quality product, and make sure your concrete is done right.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Columbus is a booming city with lots of opportunity to grow. The people love to support small businesses.

I’m from Cleveland so I would say the thing I like least about the city is that there is no Lake Erie (haha).
