Today we’d like to introduce you to Cortney Martinelli.
Hi Cortney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Cortney. I am a corporate trainer, speaker, educator, Reiki Master, Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT), founder of Akasha Yoga™, and author of the best-selling books: Love, Reiki, Vibration and the Light House. I have been supporting the wellness community for over a decade. During this time, I have worked with thousands of clients and students hosting 150+ events each year.
I am the owner of SHINE and the Light House, an Education + Wellness Center in Kent, Ohio. Here, I spend most of my time offering wellness certifications, private sessions, and support to my community.
There’s always something fun and interesting going on at SHINE. We regularly get inspiration to create new things! Our newest project is our wind phone. A wind phone (also known as the Phone of the Wind) is an “unconnected” telephone that provides a way to have conversations with deceased loved ones. It’s possibly more connected than the iPhone you carry around in your pocket because this phone provides a bridge to unseen worlds.
The original wind phone is located in Japan, created by Itaru Sasaki, a garden designer, in 2010. Sasaki constructed the telephone booth and the wind phone to help him cope with his cousin’s death. In 2011, it was opened to the public after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami killed over 15,000 people in the region. Less than a dozen replicas have been constructed around the world, including this inspired version at SHINE.
Bringing this wind phone to life was a collaboration between me and one of my dearest friends, Ted Senf. In a matter of a few weeks, I lost my grandma, Elizabeth Zarle, and Ted lost his mother, Doloris Senf to causes of old age. During this time, we were inspired by these two brilliant and vibrant women to provide an avenue for others to hold meaningful conversations with their deceased loved ones.
Soon after my grandmother’s passing, she started sending us inspiration for the phone. It was as if she wanted to be part of this creation. The wind phone wasn’t something I had heard about until the day before she died. She continues to connect and inspire even after her death.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The last decade has been a journey of personal growth. I’ve experienced every emotion and have had some dark times that ultimately led me to radical growth. There was no roadmap, so I stumbled…I’d fall, and then I’d pick myself back up again. I blindly tried anything and everything to arrive at an imaginary place of peace, joy, and happiness. Today, it’s no longer imaginary – it’s reality. It’s not by luck or chance, its science, and I gladly share my learnings with students and clients.
We’ve been impressed with SHINE Ohio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

At SHINE, we are about educating people, and a lot of that education gets to the heart of who we are as humans – energy. We have over 14 certifications; we are best known for our Reiki training because we have been offering it for over a decade and have certified over one-thousand students. But we also have certifications in sound therapy, tuning forks, positive psychology, meditation, akashic records, and restorative yoga.
