Inspiring Conversations with Asha Parson of Chairapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asha Parson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating from Troy High School in 2012, I continued my education at the Upper Valley Career Center in Piqua. There, I fell in love with cosmetology and passed the state board exam. Unfortunately, finances held me back from getting my license.

Fast forward to 2020. I was burnt out from my nursing job at hospice and searching for a new path. A life coach helped me rediscover my passion for hair. It was crazy because I used to think turning a hobby into a career would ruin the fun, but it was the opposite! I dug up my old cosmetology license and, believe it or not, it was just dormant! A quick $50 fee later, I was back in the game.

A few months after finishing coaching, I landed a job at Puff Apothecary as a salon coordinator. I loved building relationships with clients and eventually felt confident enough to take over the salon when the opportunity arose.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is balancing my passion for hair with maintaining healthy boundaries. I’ve worked in environments where the expectation was to be available 24/7, which led to burnout. I’ve learned that while cosmetology is a creative and fulfilling career, it’s equally important to establish clear boundaries and prioritize self-care. It’s essential to view this industry as a business, even if you’re working for someone else. Building a strong clientele requires dedication and consistency, but it’s equally important to invest in personal growth and well-being.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Chairapy, we empower our clients to love their textured hair by providing expert care and education. We specialize in locs and natural hair styling, with a focus on curly and kinky hair types. Our one-on-one, hourly appointments offer a personalized experience that sets us apart. I pride myself on building a strong community around textured hair in Dayton and providing exceptional client care. We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I thrive on challenges and embrace new opportunities. I took a bold step leaving healthcare to pursue a career in hairstyling. After finishing nursing school before the pandemic, I wanted to explore a different path. Now, as a stylist with three years of experience, I’m taking another exciting risk by taking on a salon.

Pricing:

  • $100 per hour.
  • new client appointments are 2hrs long equal to $200
