Hidden Gems: Meet Shannon Bowen of Flora Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Bowen

Hi Shannon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I spent the first 9 years of my career in a commissioned salon. After many years in a toxic work environment I knew that I needed to go out on my own. My goal was to create a safe and zen space for me and my clients. I now run my own business out of a suite that I rent. It has been the best decision I ever made.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Unfortunately me going out on my own required working with an attorney to get out of a noncompete. Thankfully the legal battle, albeit stressful, gave me a few months to get things in order.

I visited a lot of spaces and had a hard time finding a space that was big enough and had natural light. I wanted to absolutely love my new space. I also had to do a lot of research on ordering products and salon essentials.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a small business owner and hairstylist. Being a sustainable salon is very important to me. The beauty industry creates a lot of waste. All of my cardboard, foils, color tubes, excess color, and even hair are recycled.

I offer a range of services including haircuts, color, and styling, all designed to enhance your natural beauty and leave you feeling confident. I specialize in precision cuts, dry cuts, mens cuts, blonding, and lived in color.

My salon is dedicated to relaxation, self-care, and connection. My salon is body positive and a safe space for all people.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Reach out to other people in your field with more experience than you. Ask lots of questions! A lot of small business owners are willing to share their knowledge and help a fellow entrepreneur. I was lucky enough to have a good friend who was willing to share what her journey to suite rental was like and give me honest advice. I also recommend looking for networking events in your field. There are lots of networking events in Cincinnati.
