Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Dunham
Hi Sabrina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ryan Dunham was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He went to Wright State University and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. Ryan has always had a passion for creating a beautiful landscaped property. Since 1998, Ryan has been providing professional landscaping and property maintenance to customers in the Dayton, Ohio area. He takes care of his customer’s property like his own and spends extra time on the little details to make their landscape design standout. Ryan truly enjoys the landscaping industry and the desire to create the perfect outdoor space.
Sabrina Dunham met Ryan in 2010 while they were students in college at Wright State University. In 2015 they were married and a year later Dunham’s Lawn Care was born. Sabrina graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business from WSU and again in 2018 with a Master’s degree in Health Education from The University of Cincinnati. Sabrina has always had a passion for entrepreneurship and today she shares that same passion with Ryan. Sabrina and Ryan work together to oversee the general operations of Dunham’s Lawn Care.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The most challenging part of my job is maintaining a work-life balance, particularly while working with family members inlcuding my spouse and father-in-law, can sometimes be difficult. As a business owner, I feel like I am always on call, making it hard to take breaks since the workload never truly disappears. Although there are slower periods, there is rarely any downtime, and the weight of responsibility often falls on my shoulders. If an employee calls off or if a customer issue arises, I am typically the one who must address it, which can be frustrating. It can be especially challenging when I encounter clients who seem to take their time a bit too leisurely!
Although there are struggles with owning a business, I take immense pride in the organization my husband and I have built.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Dunham’s Lawn Care LLC?
Dunham’s Lawn Care is fortunate enough to have two female contributors to this organization. Although 47% of women make up the U.S. workforce, only 9% of those women work in the green industry (2024 Garden Media Group).
This is surprising because research shows that women have more influence over home improvement purchases than males, but many landscaping organizations are heavily dominated by males, including male ownership. (National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP)).
This led to our decision to become both a certified woman and minority owned business by the state of Ohio in 2023.
We understand that there is a level of uncertainty when selecting a contractor so our strategy to ensure trust is to be responsive. We communicate every step of our process so that there are no surprises. All our operations are listed on our website and are repeated to customers throughout the estimation and sales process.
Making customers feel heard and spending time with them onsite for a free landscaping estimate goes a long way in building trust. There is no limit to the time and dedication we spend with a client to make sure their project is completed with the upmost highest quality.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those just starting out is to understand that being a business owner is equally rewarding as it is challenging. People often believe success is due to luck and that when you are a business owner, employees do all the work for you. This is often far from the truth. In my experience as a business owner, I have never hustled harder in my life.
Our company’s success has not been due to sheer luck but nonstop grinding and the support of those around us. Be prepared to put in the time. Prepare your business for growth, unexpected events, (equipment breaking, employees calling off, taxes, etc.) and other changes by creating policies, developing a saving fund, and having procedures in writing. Having these in place in advance can be a lifesaver for handling and addressing difficult situations.
