Hidden Gems: Meet Ryan Mayer of Ryan Mayer Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Mayer.

Hi Ryan, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.

I was born and raised in the greater Cleveland area. I attended St. Edward High School. I am a graduate of the University of Dayton. I received my MBA from Cleveland State University. Before becoming a Certified ADHD coach, I worked in corporate America for over a decade… of struggles. I’ve come a long way since then. My “mess” has turned into a message of hope to inspire others (especially those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) to start believing in themselves again!
Despite a happy childhood and a strong support network of family and friends, I felt that I had fallen short of my potential. In fact, my life was overcome by overwhelm, shame, and disappointment. I felt like no matter how hard I tried or how much time I put into a job, I was doomed for failure. It even got to the point when I started to believe that I didn’t “deserve” to be successful professionally, because I was so “flawed” by my ADHD.

These are things I would regularly say to myself:

  • I can’t FULLY love my family… because I don’t fully love myself…
  • I hate my job.
  • My company doesn’t understand what it’s like to have ADHD.
  • I am not good at my job.
  • I have no idea how to prioritize my time or my tasks.
  • I am scared I will get fired…again.
  • I feel hopeless.
  • I have no routines in place… I am completely at the mercy of:
    • My inbox
    • Other’s demands
    • Projects at work
  • I am disappointed with my life right now.

When I was at the lowest point in my life after getting fired, I felt empty, depressed, and my wife was scared to leave me alone at home. One night, she asked, “Ryan, if you could do anything, what type of work would you do?” Without hesitation, I said, “I would be an ADHD Life Coach to help guide others with ADHD so they never have to go through the challenges that I have encountered.”

My struggles at work for over a decade led to my rock bottom of unemployment, depression, shame, and hopelessness. Once I came to the realization that I needed to make a drastic career change, I had a divine moment of clarity….

Have you ever had one of those Heavens-opening moments?

I was meant to be an ADHD Coach. Soon after, I saw an email that ADHD coaching certification classes were starting the next week – the universe had aligned for me! This was it! I signed up for the course and began my journey to become an ADHD Coach. I had never been one to succeed in school work; however, I was so interested by my class content that I hyperfocused on it. I had a passion for the subject of helping people with ADHD. Connecting with people had been one of the things that got me in trouble in my past jobs. Not efficient. Not helping the bottom line. Now it was setting me apart as an extremely personable and approachable coach. I began taking on ADHD clients, and they got RESULTS. I continued growing my coaching business and actually was enjoying my work for the first time in my life! I never imagined this would be possible for me.

And here we are today…

I am able to connect with ADHD clients and lead them to success every day. I am able to use my #1 Character strength of creativity in my social media videos to spread ADHD awareness. Most importantly, I am comforting other people with ADHD with my mantra: “You are not alone. Not anymore!” Those lonely, desperate times are behind us. You are with your ADHD family now. There is a better life meant for you. It all comes down to total unconditional acceptance of our brains. When we learn to work WITH our ADHD, not against it like we have so many times in the past, that’s when the magic starts to happen.

My real fulfillment comes from seeing my ADHD clients succeed. It is an honor to see how lives can be transformed by ADHD Coaching.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Financial hardship: working paycheck-to-paycheck for 4 years.

Getting fired 3 months before our first child was due – and being the one carrying the medical benefits.

Overcoming imposter syndrome while keeping my self-esteem intact.

Conquering the fear of “going public” about my disability to be a beacon of hope for others with my condition.

Starting a business during a global pandemic.

Managing a team without any prior experience.

Having to figure out systems and processes to maximize the opportunities around me and best serve my clients, especially when having a neurological impairment.

Striking the balance of running a business that benefits from social media without neglecting those who mean the most to me.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Ryan Mayer Coaching, LLC?
I offer my clients the opportunity to have an “A.H.A. Experience” – which stands for Acceptance, Hope, and Accountability. Working with me will give clients the opportunity to love themselves again by removing what held them back and rebuilding their strengths.

“I have ADHD.” Those three simple words have played a monumental role in my life, both positively and negatively. I have ADHD – so I understand many of the challenges that my clients are going through. I relate to my clients on a deep level because I know what it is like to fail, and I know how much it hurts emotionally. I know what it is like to have your self-esteem destroyed, to be cast out like yesterday’s trash, and to question your value as a person.

That is precisely why it is my life’s mission to be a Beacon of Hope, to help my fellow ADHDers to realize that they CAN be successful AND have ADHD.

As a family man, it is important to me that I help you to free up time to be with those who matter most to you… and to be able to be more present when you are with them.
