Hi Ross, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My wife MaK & I began our business with real estate development and renovation projects, setting out to blend our family and business life as much as possible, pursuing a “life together” with both outside ventures and our growing family.
In 2018, with five little girls under our roof, we embarked on the entrepreneur road with new construction and began our first two homes.
Much to our surprise, we gained a lot of attention and interest in the little city of Blue Ash, OH, as well as various media outlets – the 5DC name was creating quite a stir, bringing unique, modern designs to an overly saturated, “cookie cutter”, building pool.
Today, MaK & I are still pursing a life of “family togetherness”, incorporating our family + work life as much as possible. I operate as 5DC’s CEO & Founder and MaK operates “Team Dykstra” as CEO, Homeschooling Vet & SAHM to our 5 daughters and 2 sons, while maintaining the creative, social entity of the brand. It’s not always easy but we’re still trying to follow the road of being together and blurring the work/home lines as much as we can by doing things as a team.
Five Daughters Construction is a boutique home builder that works across Southern Ohio & Kentucky, with nearly 100 custom homes built from the ground up. We work directly with clients in building their custom dream home that is outside of the “cookie cutter” big box options. With high end finishes, attention to detail and custom craftsmanship, Five Daughters believes in curating “less house, more home” for each unique client we serve because we truly believe “home is where the heart is” and it should be prioritized as such.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is no easy task to create a “life of togetherness” with such a big family, much less while running your own business and schooling 7 children at home. In the beginning days, much risk (& much prayer) was taken to make this dream a reality… risk in building two homes under a “new” building name and trying to carve out a new path of unique, creative builds in the market. We’ve each taken turns as “stay at home parent” and try to shoulder new tasks and responsibilities of the business throughout the process of growth. God has faithfully led and directed both clients and intrigue around the Five Daughters brand.
