Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Grefe.
Rebekah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born with a kidney defect, so I was pretty sick the first few years of my life, when I was five I had surgery to correct the defect I was in a children’s hospital for over a week, and the nursing staff was so kind to me it was then, that I decided I wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. I started in the medical field 20 years ago as a licensed practical nurse, three years later I returned to school and graduated as a Registered nurse, at this time I was married and had a five-year-old and a newborn, so I decided to take some time off from school and focus on my career and family, 6 years later I returned to school to obtain my Bachelor of science in nursing, and finally, in 2018 I felt it was time to complete my journey and enroll in a master’s program and obtain my Family Nurse Practitioner certification.
It was a long journey, and a balancing act of career, school, and family.
I think women put a lot of pressure on themselves to be the best partner, mothers, employees, etc. and at times I’m sure I failed miserably in those roles, but I also like to think that I gave my children a gift by setting the example that it is never too late to achieve the goals you have in life, and so here I am 20 years later, and board certified nurse practitioner, who now owns her own Medspa franchise.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a long bumpy road, I got pregnant with my son while in college to obtain my licensed practical nurse degree, he was two weeks old when I took my boards. Then three years later I started back for my associate’s degree to become a registered nurse, most of my classes didn’t transfer from my previous college so I basically had to start all over. I graduated from the ADN program and took my RN board in February and delivered my daughter the following month. I then decided to take a break from school for 6 years, then I returned to a bridge program and obtained my BSN two years later.
It was at the end of this program that my daughter got sick and was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, so then I took three years off of school until she was medically stable and then I went back for my master’s degree. I was a little over halfway through my master’s program when Covid started, it was absolutely horrible, working in a hospital with an immunocompromised child at home, clinical rotations for my program were stopped to help keep the transmission rates down, so I could not complete the required hours needed to graduate which resulted in my 2 1/2 year program taking over 3 years to complete.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
This is a mobile medspa franchise, the MOBO business was started by two females and all franchise owners are also female. I really like that it is a business built on women empowering other women.
Franchisees buy a territory and then they contract with salons in that territory to bring Medspa services to their clients. We offer botox, dermal fillers, microneedling, chemical peels, kybella, medical-grade skincare, and health and wellness services.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I think my biggest lesson was not to compare my journey to the journey of others. It’s ok to not be the first to finish the race, the important thing was to finish.
