Hidden Gems: Meet Madison Oliver of StyledByMaddie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Oliver

Hi Madison , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a 19 Year old licensed cosmetologist that started doing hair at 12. I wasn’t that interested in doing hair at first. I started practicing on myself and began practicing on my siblings. Soon after, word spread throughout my family that I had been practicing and someone mentioned to me that I could create a portfolio and get paid to do other people’s hair. The more I started doing hair the more I realized I actually enjoyed it. When I was 16 I knew for sure that this is the career I wanted to pursue so I enrolled into a trade school in Cincinnati called Scarlet Oaks Career Campus. Being there I was taught the fundamentals of being a cosmetologist. I very much enjoyed being at the school because I was learning things I actually wanted to know about. 2 years later I graduated from the program and met all of the requirements to become a licensed cosmetologist. About 3 months after that I got an offer to become a member at a salon located in Dayton Ohio. I have been at the salon for a while now and I love it. I am now continuing to grow as a business owner and hopefully salon owner one day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When someone first mentioned to me that I should create a portfolio and charge people I was a little hesitant. I felt that the beauty industry was already full and that there wouldn’t be enough room for me.

I am from Dayton but I was living in Cincinnati during my years of high school. A couple months after I enrolled into the trade school I found out my mom had breast cancer and we moved back to Dayton to be closer to family. I ended up having to drive from Dayton to Cincinnati everyday just to attend to school. It was starting to get challenging having to drive everyday, study, complete internship that was required, and do hair at home. It was by the grace of God that I was able to complete the program.

As you know, we’re big fans of StyledByMaddie. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am known for being a young hairstylist that specializes in braids. The thing that sets me apart is the way I empathize with my clients. I know how it feels to be on the other end of very bad customer service and I want my clients to feel most loved when they are sitting in my chair. I would like for the readers to know that this brand is not of my own doing but is faith based and depends on Jesus Christ.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the calmness & dislike the holes that are in the roads
