Hidden Gems: Meet Julie Yarkony of Jubie’s Creamery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Yarkony.

Hi Julie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Jubie’s Creamery is a proud, family-owned business by Stacey, Fred, and their daughter Julie. All the way back in 2011, Stacey & Fred came across building for sale in Fairborn, Ohio on the corner of Kauffman Avenue and Dayton-Yellow Springs Road. What started as a deal that couldn’t be ignored triggered a light bulb to go off over all three of their heads. Together, they would open an ice cream shop. From 2011 to 2017, the three worked tirelessly around college internships and full time jobs to gain valuable ice cream knowledge. From attending seminars and talking to small business owners at the North American Ice Cream Association to graduating Scoop School in St. Louis, Missouri, they learned the tools they needed to open their doors.

Jubie’s first opened in July of 2018, and since then has added a second location in Troy and a mobile ice cream bus. They are dedicated to striving for the highest quality possible in everything they do – from the products they serve to the people who serve them. In order to achieve this, they create their hand dipped ice cream one small batch at a time to provide unique, always-fresh creations. Their menu is designed to fulfill even the wildest of ice cream dreams with a variety of crowd favorites, specialty flavors, soft serve custard creations, and many other tasty treats.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have learned countless painstaking lessons along the way after opening in 2018 . Many of our first challenges were due to being much busier than we originally anticipated. We had no idea the community would embrace us in the way that they did. It was incredible to see and a “good” problem to have. We quickly learned how to train up, create new processes, and how to effectively manage in the food industry.

From there, our next challenge hit everyone – COVID. We entered 2020 thinking we would expand and instead spent the rest of the year with our plans on hold and our health policies changing daily.

In 2022, we were thrilled to open our 2nd store in Moraine. What we thought would be another wild success did not start off that way, or even end that way. We were sad to have made the tough decision to close our doors in Moraine at the beginning of 2025 after so much time, effort, and investment in the community.

We’ve been impressed with Jubie’s Creamery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

We are proud to have won numerous national awards for our ice cream from the North American Ice Cream Association. They include:
– Best New Flavor from the Midwest 2021: Choc-A-Lot
– Vanilla Pearl: Blue Ribbon Winner based on quality & food safety standards set by FDA & Cornell’s Dairy Extension Team
– Chocolate: Blue Ribbon Winner based on quality & food safety standards set by FDA & Cornell’s Dairy Extension Team
– Strawberry: Red Ribbon Winner based on quality & food safety standards set by FDA & Cornell’s Dairy Extension Team

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Overall, our business strives to be risk adverse. We have created standards and metrics for our stores that help us maintain stability overall, especially financially. We gather information before making large decisions and will often times bring in 3rd parties to help in our decision making process. Our strategy is never perfect and will not completely eliminate risk, but we constantly do our best to minimize risk as much as possible.
