Hidden Gems: Meet Josh Miller of Midsole Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Miller.

Josh Miller

Hi Josh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I’ve had a pretty eventful journey full of dead ends and sharp turns. During my first year of high school, I discovered my passion for capturing moments and telling stories through photos & video. After dropping out of art school and years of working more jobs than I care to count, I jumped into freelancing full-time in 2012. With dreams of directing music videos and creating album artwork for my favorite music artists, I organized music and art events around the OSU campus in 2014 to connect with local hip-hop artists. It was organizing hip-hop shows and music festivals that I found another passion of mine: connecting with people and helping businesses grow.

After 6 years of organizing events full-time, the pandemic hit in 2020 and put the live event industry on hold. Crazy enough, I was contemplating taking a break from the event industry just before the industry shut down, so I took it as a sign to dig a little deeper into my work to uncover what it was about live events that I loved. With that year of self-reflection and talking to my wife, we decided to focus on client work and become a full-service marketing agency. This allowed us to take our marketing and event experience and use it to help entrepreneurs that we cared about achieve their goals in business.

Midsole Marketing was born with that new sense of direction and clarity, and my wife and I are running things as official partners. It’s incredible to work alongside someone you can balance out so well, and I’m super grateful for this opportunity while we raise our son and build a life together.

Today, Midsole Marketing works with small to medium-sized businesses throughout Ohio on all their marketing needs, from high-level digital and direct marketing strategies to executing day-to-day responsibilities like social media management, event production, email marketing, and more.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are always new obstacles to face in business, from the early days of just trying to pay bills and picking up odd jobs like delivering pizzas or shoveling snow to managing team members and improving processes. The biggest obstacle, which is also why I love being an entrepreneur, is that it’s all up to you. You get to choose what type of business you’ll start, how you’ll structure it, who you’ll work with, and everything else that goes with running a business. It’s all up to you. That’s the scariest and most exciting thing about the journey.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Midsole Marketing, it’s all about the people. Knowing everything there is to know about the people we work with and who make up the company’s target audience. We love the psychology behind marketing and what makes people take action. So that’s a big part of what sets us apart. That’s the meaning behind Midsole. We develop strategies from your target customer’s shoes and use our experience to help our clients grow. One of the big things I love about having an agency compared to working in-house with a company is that we get to take what we learn from other businesses and industries to execute more robust strategies with all of our clients.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Self-awareness and being a lifelong student are the most critical factors in my success and the success of our business. If you can’t reflect on your work, business, and yourself, you can’t improve to be your best self. So, the hunger to improve and do the best job we can do for our clients is vital.
