Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Earwood.
Hi Josh, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Starting back when I was 17, now 41, Ive been weight training. Back then it was a way get away from the craziness going on at the house, training always felt good. Great way to use my energy in a positive and rewarding way. I had always used the weights as a way to deal with stress and lifes struggles. Of course I went through the ego lifting phases and looked like an idiot, but as I grew, got humbled a few times to say the least, Learned real fast to train muscles not movements, I continued the hobby and lifestyle even through college at Morehead State University . While everyone was out partying I was training.and putting in work. I started heavily into bodybuilding and really took off, But, thats also the time I started powerlifting. My trainlng style of “Powerbuilding” became the new focus as I started to discover idols like Ronnie Colman and Dorian Yates. Something about heavy weights and lots of reps and high pain tolerances were the best for results. Having a developed physique and being stong at the same time was always the goal. Studying legends like Arnold,a andTom Platz, along with many others along with my own trial and error experiences brought me a long way. By the time I reached my senior year I remember thats when people started asking questions, “How much protein do you take? ” or “What do you train for back etc” I was an official gym bro that everyone used for advice haha. If the shoe fits right>?
After College 2009 I moved to Columbus Ohio for a Marketing job and lets just say after a couple months it didnt work out. I was quickly doing different things to stay afloat in this big city, Not wanting to move back home, I took on bartending jobs, restaurant jobs , odd jobs etc. One night after being terminated from a bartending job for over pouring, I finished up my shift and I remember driving home late wondering what my next move was going to be, the radio had played an advertisement, something like ” Do you love to workout?, Do you live in the gym? You should become a personal trainer!!!” an ad for ISSA Personal Training. I thought to myself at that time It was the next move. I love training, I live in the gym, Why not help others?
After getting certified just weeks later, I decided to start a traveling personal training business. Called it VigLife Personal Training. as in Vigorous- Strong, Healthy, Fit. VIg for short. Starting from nothing I put my markeing skills to use and had a decent gig, but not for long. I wasnt able to continue traveling around with little equipment, old durango. It was a failed attempt. At that time I did the next best thing and went Corporate. Decided to get a job with Lifetime Fitness 2016. Amazing decision allowing me to excel and learn the business, learn people. skills, build clients. continued knowledge and education with various certifications in nutrition, metabolics, etc. Truly a game changer for my passion for helping people and growing as a coach.
After a a few months of working for Lifetime my brother unexpectedly passed away, It through me for a loop and was overwhelmingly tough for me to get through. A week before this I had I decided to apply for the Management postion as the Team Development Leader, and at the same time I discoved our loss I was given the offer to be the TDM of Lifetime. I decided to put my head down and work., training for this position, countless hours of studies and classes with ongoing online certs to keep me busy and distracted. I had been sharpening my tools and perfecting my craft. Being a manger , leading a team ,and building a business was an amazing experience, I also met my wife at LifeTIme- she was my client, then and we had done 3 shows together and fell in love, years later we got married last year in Bali, I would say dont date clients ever, unless youre going to marry them, lolol
I decided after 6 months to leave Lifetime and start my own business. This time- I was ready. I had all the tools and a solid book of clients. I was ready to move.
I started Ntense Fitness614 LLC. and After all these years and still today business is here to stay! I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Never a smooth road.
As previously mentioned, learned a lot throught trial and error. Found out that personal experience from being a meat head with a basic CPT didnt get me very far. Sometimes you have to remember that you are always a student and there is always more to learn. No mattter how great you get there is still more to learn about yourself as a coach, the people you want to coach, and , the indurty in general. You find out how hard it is to start a business. How to attract clients and even more important how to coach them. It is a big deal and serious position to be in in charge of someones trust and health. They come to me for help, I need to be able to teach and educate them effectively so they can soon be successful with their goals on their own, If you dont have passion for actual change this is not the profession to be in. Passion is what always took me though the hard times and ups and downs of business not always being smooth. From failed attempts to boucing around different gyms, sometimes the road needs to be rough so you can learn how to navigate your strengths and weaknesses in your profession in order to be successful.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ntense Fitness is just that, Intense! Ive spent year learning how perfect the art of recruiting muscle fiber and how to properly traing every muscle in the human body. I try to teach people that stress equals response. You must shock the body and cause stress in order to grow. The training needs to be Intense and effective so that when nutritional protocols are in place the growth and results happen. This way the client recieves the best ROI – Return on Investment. Most people hire a personal trainer and spend a lot of time and money learning nothing, going through the motions, no actual plan, just random exercises and types of fitness but nothing intentional or useful towards their goals or what they actually need based on their health etc. I offer full health and nutritional protocols, custom training plans and cardio protocols and much more. I take pride in treating my services like a College course. Teaching physiology and proper nutritional habits, gut health, and many other important topics to keep every client at their best. Not just earning the results and training hard, but learning the “why” behind everything they are doing. That way they can walk away with the skills and knowledge to grow. We work hard. We recover hard. Ntense Fitness is a one stop shop! Offering onlline and Inperson coaching for all.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
No luck.
Yes its good to know people in a sense. Its great to connect with other business leaders and your community to increase chances and oppurtunities, but not luck. All the work, the connecting, the building, the meetings, the collaborations, the ground work has to be done., Luck doesnt exist here, only how a person positions themselves, using aquired skills , through hard work and ongoing dedication. No luck! Just work!
