Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Andres.
Hi Joanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My passion for photography blossomed after becoming a stay-at-home mom to my two children, Luca and Olivia. While cherishing those early moments, the cost of professional milestone photos became a strain on our single income. This sparked a creative solution: purchasing my first DSLR camera. Fueled by a desire to capture professional-quality photos, I dove into learning camera functions and editing techniques. Through relentless practice on my own children, positive social media feedback, and encouragement from friends, I started offering photography sessions for a small fee. Over the past decade, this passion project has evolved into a thriving business, fueled by continuous learning and investment in equipment and studio space. The joy I bring to both my children and my clients through these captured memories is truly rewarding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been without obstacles. Five years ago, a breast cancer diagnosis brought a significant challenge. Chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation, and infusions demanded a year of my strength. However, photography became a source of resilience. Even on the most exhausting days, capturing the wonder of newborns brought immense joy. It offered a powerful escape, allowing me to focus on the beauty I was creating and the love shared by new families. This experience solidified my passion for photography and its ability to uplift not only my clients but also myself.
As you know, we’re big fans of Joanna Andres Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in capturing precious newborn and milestone moments for families. My passion lies in transforming fleeting moments into timeless keepsakes that families can cherish for generations.
Here’s what sets me apart:
A Mother’s Touch: Having been a stay-at-home mom myself, I understand the immense value of those early stages. I bring a nurturing and gentle approach to every session, ensuring both babies and parents feel comfortable and relaxed.
Stress-Free Experience: I take care of everything, from setting up the perfect lighting and backdrop to posing your little one. You can simply focus on enjoying this special time with your child.
Milestone Magic: I go beyond just adorable newborn photos. I offer cake smash sessions for first birthdays, capturing the joy and mess of this exciting milestone.
Investment in Quality: I continuously invest in high-quality equipment, props, and backdrops to create a professional and visually stunning experience.
Customization is Key: I personalize each session to reflect your family’s unique style. Whether you have a specific theme in mind for your baby’s birthday party or simply prefer a classic, timeless look, I can create a backdrop that complements your vision.
Memories Beyond the Digital: While you’ll receive beautiful digital images, I also encourage clients to preserve these precious moments in a tangible form. I offer heirloom-quality keepsake albums so your child can cherish these photos as they grow up.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the joy my work brings to families. Capturing these special moments allows families to relive those early years filled with wonder and love. The positive feedback and referrals from happy clients fuel my passion and inspire me to keep creating magic.

Let me capture the magic of your growing family and create keepsakes that will be treasured for years to come.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Passion is Key: This career path requires dedication and perseverance. Let your love for photography and capturing special moments fuel your journey.
Invest in Learning: Photography is a craft. Take online courses, workshops, or even mentor under an established photographer. Mastering the technical aspects will elevate your work.
Practice Makes Progress: Don’t be afraid to experiment and hone your skills. Offer free or discounted sessions to friends and family to build your portfolio and gain experience.
Find Your Niche: The photography world is vast. While you might dabble in different areas initially, specializing in a specific niche, like newborns and families, can help you stand out.
Embrace the Business Side: Running a photography business goes beyond taking beautiful photos. Learn about marketing, pricing, and client management.
Build Your Brand: Develop a strong online presence showcasing your work and personality. Network with other photographers and local businesses.
Believe in Yourself: There will be moments of doubt, but trust your vision and the value you offer clients.
Looking back, here are a few things I wish I knew starting out:
The Power of Social Media: Utilize social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to showcase your work and connect with potential clients.
Importance of Networking: Building relationships with other photographers and vendors in your area can lead to valuable referrals and collaborations.
Invest in Yourself Early: While fancy equipment is tempting, focus on building your skillset first. Invest in workshops or mentors who can elevate your photography.
Remember, success takes time. Be patient, keep learning, and most importantly, have fun capturing the magic of families!
