Today we’d like to introduce you to James Heaton.
Hi James, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a teenager leaving high school, I thought I would like to be a doctor someday, but had no idea how I was going to get there. I began my undergrad at The Ohio State University, and when the money ran out, I went back to work as a computer operator. I continued to grow in computer sciences, earning an Associate’s Degree, and working my way up as a systems engineer and supervisor. I realized that I had gone down a diverged path from my original goals of being a physician. Searching for an answer, I believe God pointed me in the right direction. My wife, Shawn, was suffering from severe lower back pain, and foot drop, from a work injury. was barely able to walk, and she was being treated with physical therapy and pain management for months, with no signs of improvement. At this time, her brother was in Chiropractic college in St Louis, and his instructor evaluated Shawn. Despite the herniated disc, and seemingly no other options, but surgery, Dr Whitley agreed to treat her at that moment. He placed her on a table and did a prone lumbar adjustment, that was a very dramatic experience to witness, Shawn got up off the table, and was able to walk, PAIN-FREE! My mind was blown-away by the effectiveness of these chiropractic adjustments, and it became a pivotal moment in making an extreme career change. I left a great job at GM, and moved to St Louis, and finished my pre-med, and earned my Doctorate of Chiropractic. I then spent another 4 years as an associate working with a busy and successful chiropractor, and in 2000, I opened my own practice, in the heart of Grove City, Ohio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Between student loans, raising a family, and opening a brand new practice, it was often a struggle to pay the bills. I also committed my life years ago, to Jesus, and needed to continue my commitments at my church, Highland Baptist. God was with me all the way, and gave me strength to persevere through the hard times.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Heaton Family Chiropractic?
HFC has served the Grove City community for 25 years, providing effective spinal correction and pain relief. I utilize a variety of chiropractic adjustment techniques. These range from gentle adjustments using tools to hands-on manipulation, depending on the patient’s needs. I treat all ages, from infants to older adults. My practice offers a variety of therapeutic modalities, to assist in the healing process. Additionally, I provide health and wellness advice and support. I also offer supportive products to enhance the patient experience and assist in their recovery. The difference between HFC and other chiropractic practices, in my opinion, is years of experience and a genuine caring for the well-being of my patients. My patients value the care provided, in a personable and welcoming atmosphere. Me, and my staff, have a genuine desire to serve and restore the health and abilities of each person that walks in the door. The goal is to return them to doing the things they love, with better function and decreased pain. Alongside Chiropractic adjustments, we have skilled Licensed Massage Therapists to assist in their treatment goals. We work with the VA to serve our veteran population. Through local attorney’s we receive personal injury referrals. We are also certified providers for the Ohio BWC.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Over the years, it has been beneficial to seek out the advice and skills of my peers in this field, and other medical professionals. My practice has grown over the years by providing effective treatments to my patients, and they in turn, refer their friends and family. I also stay actively engaged in my community, especially through the Grove City Noon Lion’s Club and with my church family at Highland Baptist. I am also a member of The Patriot Project, providing free care to select active military personnel, who in turn, graciously refer their friends and family.
