Hi Faith, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
OilsByFaith mission is to grow awareness for self-love, self-care, and building confidence. But first, you must know the beginning to understand my journey.
The purpose for OilsByFaith was founded before I was ready to give it life. In 2018, my husband and I, in agreeance, began the process of having our youngest son evaluated for Autism. After receiving diagnosis of mild to moderate Autism it shocked my core. I became angry, sad, very emotionally all signs of depressed. I never felt this way and it frighten me. At that moment, I knew I needed to break free from these emotions and regain control.
A simple thought and an action resulted in chopping off my hair. I went from relaxed shoulder-length hair to a low afro with faded side. And it felt good! I felt energized! I was free until I realized I never had natural hair.
So, I began researching natural hair care routines and discovered essential oils. Once I learned about their benefits for aromatherapy, elevating moods & energy, and improving skin & hair. I made a few products and used them.
The next few years I used my products and saw amazing results. My hair grew longer than my original length and my skin was the healthiest I have ever seen. My energy and mood were elevated. I developed a new version of myself and it was refreshing.
As far as my son, he is enrolled in Cincinnati Public School Autism Unit for Kindergarten and receiving weekly OT and Speech therapy.
My current customers witnessed similar results with fuller, longer, and healthier hair and skin. I absolutely love my products, our customers, and the community we are creating. But without funding assistance, this small business will eventually close by the end of 2021. With funding assistance, I can proceed raising awareness on how important mental health, self-love, self-care, and building confidence is for working moms, parents of disabled children, and the black community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a small business during the pandemic has been humbling experience. The challenges didn’t begin until this year – were the cost of goods to produce inventory increase dramatically and business has decrease by 85%. So recently budget cuts were initiated in order to keep business open. However, those budget cuts for social media advertising, vending opportunities at outdoor festivals, and downgrading our e-commerce website functions has also decreases sales, the opportunity to grow our audience/following and business.

My business cares strongly about conserving our planet. OBF containers use for products are made with recyclable material and we encourage all customers to recycle their empty containers or reuse them. To minimize our carbon footprint, we no longer send packing slips in shipments, packing slip are sent via email. Our business is making monthly adjustments to eliminate unnecessary usage of paper, shipping materials and using non-recyclable materials.
Even though starting this business was difficult, I have no rejects. The journey thus far has giving me so much joy. I have connected with customers all other the United States and United Kingdom. I have witnessed their hair growth results from decades of thinning/undesirable hair which is motivation for me to continue this journey. No matter how hard it gets. I will not quit.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The main lesson learned living during the covid-19 crisis was taking care of your body, mental health, and energy. So, if/when my energy is low (sad or depressed) I do not package orders, make products or interact with customers. I always want to make sure I am providing above and beyond customer service because I genuinely care for my customers and their mental health.
