Hidden Gems: Meet Elizabeth Hampton of Coastline Coffee Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Hampton.

Elizabeth Hampton

Hi Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My mom, Kym, always worked in coffee when I was growing up, so I would sometimes go with her to work and help out. As soon as I was working age, I went straight to coffee. We are both extremely passionate about coffee and community, so when we came up with the idea to start this business, it was a no-brainer!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for us was finding a suitable building. It was super tough knowing the market was from somewhere else, but we were fortunate to find the place that we did.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The coastline is unique to Ohio because we brought in a theme from home. Kym and I were both born and raised in California. Kym moved here about a year before I did, and the decor needed to reflect things I am passionate about. I grew up around surfing, skating, and the 70s-esque California coastal lifestyle. Right now, all of our beans and pastries are local, and we will be introducing a new specialty house roast from a roastery based out of Charlotte, NC, starting later this May. We also wanted to foster a place for community, so we host events such as bi-weekly open mic nights and cookie and cupcake decorating hosted by local bakers, and we plan on having small local singer/songwriter concerts soon.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Starting a business always feels like a risk. Kym has always been less of a risk taker, but I am quite the opposite. But take significant risks and get considerable rewards!
