Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Neely.
Hi Ann, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins with a deep-rooted love for people, hospitality, meaningful details, and the joy that comes from events that bring others together to celebrate life’s most special moments. I’ve always been drawn to organization—whether it was making to-do lists, coordinating plans, or being the go-to person when something needed to get done.
During my freshman year of college, I encountered a pivotal moment. After a challenging first semester, I realized my initial path toward teaching was no longer an option. I wasn’t eligible to sit for the teaching licensure exam due to GPA requirements, and I found myself at a crossroads. While exploring new paths, I discovered the Event Planning major—attracted not only by the creative, people-centered nature of the field, but also (admittedly) by the fact that it didn’t require advanced math. What began as a practical choice quickly became a passion, and I dove in headfirst. I never looked back, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’m proud to be a graduate of Bowling Green State University, where I earned my undergraduate degree in Event Planning, and The University of Alabama, where I completed a master’s degree in Hospitality Management. These programs shaped the foundation of my career and deepened my understanding of leadership, logistics, and the guest experience—skills that have been instrumental in launching and growing my business.
Over the last decade, I’ve had the opportunity to plan and execute more than 1,000 events of all sizes and scopes—from weddings and social gatherings to university commencement ceremonies, donor celebrations, board receptions, and corporate functions. With every event, I’ve become known for thoughtful planning, seamless execution, and creating warm, welcoming environments where people feel truly celebrated.
Like many in the hospitality and events industry, I faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Events were canceled, postponed, or completely reimagined. It was a season of uncertainty, but it reminded me just how essential human connection is—and how much purpose I find in this work. I stayed in the industry throughout, adapting as needed: learning new safety protocols, measuring six feet between guests, embracing virtual and hybrid event models, and helping to re-envision what celebration could look like. It was incredibly difficult, but it strengthened my resilience, sharpened my creativity, and reaffirmed my belief in the power of what I do.
In October 2024, I took a leap of faith and officially launched Ann Neely Events, LLC in Northwest Ohio. My mission is to offer elevated, full-service event planning that curates timeless experiences from concept to completion—through impeccable organization, innovative design, and a commitment to excellence in every detail. Whether I’m planning a wedding, a corporate event, or a milestone celebration, I aim to create moments that matter—planned to perfection.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of my husband, family, and close friends. Their encouragement, belief in me, and constant cheerleading gave me the confidence to pursue this dream and the strength to keep going when the road got tough. It truly takes a village, and I’m beyond grateful for mine.
This journey has been filled with growth, gratitude, and grit—and I wouldn’t change a thing. I wholeheartedly believe in the power of hospitality and the magic that happens when people come together. That belief is at the heart of everything I do at Ann Neely Events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth—but I’ve learned that the most meaningful journeys rarely are. From questioning my career path in the early days to navigating the uncertainty of a global pandemic, I’ve faced challenges that demanded resilience, flexibility, and a deep belief in the work I do.
The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, was one of the hardest seasons in my career. Like so many in the events industry, I watched carefully planned celebrations vanish from the calendar almost overnight. It was a time of constant pivots—navigating postponements, implementing safety protocols, and embracing virtual and hybrid formats. It stretched me in ways I couldn’t have predicted, but it also reminded me of the heart behind this work: people. At its core, events are about connection—and even amid distancing and uncertainty, we found ways to honor that.
Launching a business from the ground up has brought its own growing pains. When you’re the planner, bookkeeper, marketer, and strategist all in one, the learning curve is steep. But every challenge has brought clarity—and made me more grounded in my “why.” One quote from my favorite football coach, Nick Saban, has stuck with me: “There is no continuum for success. Focus on the progress, not the results.” That perspective has shaped my mindset in entrepreneurship. I’ve learned that building something meaningful means focusing on the process—refining systems, learning as I go, and intentionally curating Ann Neely Events to serve clients with care and excellence.
It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap, especially when you’re less than a year in and looking at planners who’ve been doing this for 15+ years. But I’ve learned that success doesn’t come from replicating someone else’s path—it comes from honoring your own. Staying focused on progress over perfection has helped me stay in my lane, serve well, and continue building something I’m truly proud of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the intentionality that’s woven into everything I do. I believe the best events are ones that reflect the people they’re for and my job is to make that happen in a way that feels seamless, joyful, and elevated.

At the end of the day, it’s about more than checklists and centerpieces. It’s about creating spaces where people can gather, connect, and celebrate what matters most and I consider it a true honor to be a part of those moments.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Starting out in the events industry can feel overwhelming, but it’s incredibly rewarding. My advice is to always ask questions, embrace the learning curve, and never underestimate the value of experience. Each event, regardless of size and scope, is an opportunity to refine your skills and deepen your understanding of what works.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of building strong relationships. Whether with clients, vendors, or fellow planners, the events industry is built on connections. Cultivate a network of trusted people who inspire you—these relationships will provide invaluable support, insights, and business opportunities through mutual growth.
Be patient with yourself. When I started, I often compared myself to more established planners. But everyone’s journey is different. Focus on your own growth, keep honing your craft, and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Over time, you’ll find your rhythm.
Stay committed to lifelong learning. Whether through books, podcasts, conferences, or networking groups, continuous education is key to staying ahead in this ever-evolving industry.
It’s also important to remember that events are not as glamorous as they seem. The process from concept to completion often involves long hours, 15+ hour days, high-stress situations, and working in all types of conditions. But even when it’s challenging, staying on your A-game is essential.
Lastly, take risks and find your niche. The events industry is constantly evolving, and what sets you apart—whether in design, customer service, or a specialty—can make all the difference.
Starting in events is about learning, adapting, and staying passionate. Don’t be afraid to jump in, make mistakes, and keep going. The hard work will pay off in ways you may not expect.
