Hidden Gems: Meet Angie King of Homegrown on Haubner Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie King

Hi Angie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a green thumb. I grew up watching and helping my grandparents and parents growing vegetables and preserving the vegetables that we grew. When I married, my husband and I continued to grow vegetables. There was a learning curve, as we tried to grow on our own. A few years later we purchased land from my husbands family farm on Haubner Road. Fast forward 24 years. We have two vegetable gardens and we preserve our vegetables to provide for our family off season. I have a corporate job and began to wish for something more fulfilling a few years ago. I signed up for my first gardening class to become a Master Rain Gardener. Then I became certified as a Master Gardener. My love of gardening grew as I learned about sustainability, preserving the land and the importance of being in nature for body and mental wellness. Once my classes were complete, I installed a rain garden and pollinator garden at our home and a pollinator garden at my daughter’s school. But, I still wanted more. I wanted to share my education and happiness with others. In October 2023, I launched “Homegrown on Haubner Hill”, a flower farm in California, KY. In the summer of 2024, the eighth of an acre flower field was bursting with flowers which I started from seed in my home – over 50 different varieties. I’ve hosted several on-farm events such as U-pick experiences, workshops, parties and fundraisers. I also provided flowers for local nursing homes, bridal showers and special bouquet orders. Homegrown on Haubner Hill was a stop on the Campbell County Backroads farm tour, where over 700 people stepped foot on the farm. A few photographers found my gem of a farm and took senior and family photos in the flower field and around our beautiful farm. Off season, I create using dried flowers from the field – everlasting pumpkins and bouquets in the fall, Christmas ornaments, and spring floral hoops. I hope that Homegrown on Haubner Hill brings as much joy to those that step foot on Haubner Hill as it has made us. The joy of hanging out in the flowers brings a sense of peace and I love showing people that anyone can do this – all you need is a bit of soil, sun and water.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for me is keeping up with administrative tasks and tracking inventory and income. I am still using spreadsheets. Social Media is a challenge as well – I’m mainly on Facebook and know that I should be using other social channels more frequently.

As you know, we’re big fans of Homegrown on Haubner Hill. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Local family flower farm with seasonal cut flowers on an eighth of an acre in southern Campbell County, located in California, Kentucky. We offer U-pick flower experiences, workshops, bucket subscriptions and special order bouquets. Photography mini sessions are available throughout the season – or option to bring your own photographer! Flower season is mid June – October. Events can be found on our website or Facebook. Our property has been described as a little bit of heaven in the middle of nowhere.

What makes you happy?
When someone asks me about my business, I’m proud and happy that it’s something that I have built from the ground up (literally) and that I have full support from my husband and daughters. I’m happy to share my little piece of heaven with those that visit. When I see people walking through the rows of flowers, they are happy and experiencing something that most have not experienced before. I also enjoy talking to people that want to learn to grow something but don’t know where to start. Some of my seeds also tell a story – The zinnia seed that I grow is from Grandma Haubner and the ornamental bean seed is from my Grandpa Tom Kramer. Little memories of family that were a part of my beginnings are sprinkled in around the flower field.
