Hi Alexis , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Lex, the creator of Modern Cosmetics. I started this business when I was 23 after escaping a toxic relationship that had drained me of sense of self. Walking away was the moment everything changed for me – it was when I finally chose me and decided I was going to live fully, on my own terms.
I didn’t have a plan, but I had vison. A love for beauty and self-expression, and a deep desire to help people feel more confident and connected to themselves. So I followed my gut, trusted my creativity, and invested everything I had into building this business from the ground up.
Modern Cosmetics was born from that moment of reclaiming my power. What started as a permanent makeup studio has grown into a vision for something much deeper- a space rooted in healing, self-care, and soul. I’m currently in advanced esthetics training to expand into skincare and holistic wellness services. My goal is to create a sanctuary that honors the whole person- mind, body, and spirit.
This isn’t just a business to me-it’s truly my soul’s work. And I want everyone who walks through my doors to feel that same sense of renewal and aliveness that creating it has given me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve poured everything into building this business- emotionally, physically, financially. And while it might look effortless from the outside, it’s been anything but. I started Modern Cosmetics with no formal business experience- just vision, passion, and drive.
There were times that I thought I might lose everything. I relocated my business across states and had to rebuild my clientele from scratch. I was almost convinced to dissolve my business- almost handed it over to someone who wanted to take credit for what I’d created. I’ve trusted the wrong people, entered partnerships that didn’t align, and been stolen from- creatively, financially, and literally. But I’ve learned. I now know how to set boundaries, protect my work, and stay rooted in my values and true to myself.
I’ve also dealt with people who told me flat out I couldn’t do this- that I wasn’t strong enough, capable enough, healthy enough. But I did it anyway.
Mistakes, failures, setbacks- I’ve experienced it all. But every challenge taught me how to adapt, evolve, and persevere. It’s the tough moments that have shaped me into who I am. I’m more grounded, more resilient, and more clear than ever on the mission. I trust myself now. And I know that no matter what, I’m going to follow my heart and keep building something real.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I definitely consider myself a risk-taker. I’ve never been interested in playing it safe or playing it small. We only get one life and I’m going to make the absolute most of mine. Leaving college and investing (literally) everything I had into pursuing a cosmetic tattoo apprenticeship, when that was something I had never done in my life, was a gamble.
Starting Modern Cosmetics at 23 with minimal finances and no real safety net was a huge risk. So was moving states and relocating my business, walking away from people and opportunities that didn’t align, and trusting my intuition over what made sense on paper. But every leap has brought me that much closer to who I really am and what I’m meant to build and contribute to this world. I’d rather take the risk and give it all I’ve got than live with regret.
