Nikki T., so thrilled to have you joining us again, this time to talk all about products and so let’s jump right in. Please give our audience some background on the product side.
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me…..a copy of a must reaaad!!
With the holiday season approaching, turkey won’t be the only thing being passed around the dinner table. Alongside the bird, a side of uncomfortable conversations may be served up, but lucky you…. you’ll be ready to join the conversation comfortably and informed because you were inspired by Nikki T. Anthony’s new book, The Price We Pay, a YA novel about the price families and communities pay when people remain silent and do nothing to stop racism in its tracks.
Zenetta Henchman has already lost most of her faith in humanity. After a spree of attacks against not only herself but the people she cares about, such faith is hard to keep. It’s not made any easier by the fact that her father, the only Black officer on the Buzzardville, Alabama police force, chooses to act against his community when they—and Zenetta—need him the most. This betrayal is just one part of the chain of events, including her own decisions, that teaches Zenetta about the chilling reality she lives in.
The Price We Pay, coined the To Kill a Mockingbird of the 21st century, depicts the ultimate price that is paid by those who choose to remain silent, and by those who choose to speak up.
Nikki T. Anthony is a multi-faceted writer, and the Author of the Young Adult Novel The Price We Pay. The conversation starter of the 21st century will help bridge the gap between races by encouraging and cultivating open, honest, and thoughtful discussions that lead to conversations of the heart and mind. Do you remember the moment you realized the world needed this product?
I think I realized that the world really needed this product after turning on the news everyday, and seeing what was happening to our youth in real time. The bias against them, and even the bias against law enforcement caused me to take a step back and say it’s time to create something that can act as a conversation starter, sparking healthy debate while addressing any bias that may be present. Especailly during the holiday season, when conversations tend to become more engaging.
Is there a core message, value or ethos you are trying to communicate through your branding and marketing?
The core message that I want to convey would be that as a result of the novel itself readers will be able to use it as a tool against inquality, while understanding the experiences of others more, without the presence of bias. So many of us have been conditioned with the characteristics of learned behavior that we don’t even realize when we’re being bias of other cultures, or even their experiences. I’d like to think that’s where The Price We Play comes into perspective. Readers will be able to use it as a novel way to address those learned behaviors, and to debunk those biases.
Do you have any advice for folks who are just starting out?
The best advice I can give is to be consistent. Even when things aren’t going as planned, stay consistent. Consistency pays off in the end. Just when you think no one is looking or paying attention, there is someone who is. But how would you know if you don’t stay the course?
