Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Hunt.
Hi Tracy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Getting into a helping profession wasn’t obvious. As a young adult, I was drawn toward teaching, but my mom encouraged me to earn an associate degree in Office Information Systems so I could have a stable career as a secretary. After that I worked full-time while taking college classes part-time, using my employer’s tuition reimbursement to continue my education.
I eventually moved into marketing, where I found the new challenges I had been looking for, and transferred to Antioch University McGregor (now Antioch University Midwest) to complete my bachelor’s degree. While there, I took a few Human Development electives and immediately knew I had found what I was looking for. I added a minor, and one of my advisors, Jane Brown, encouraged me to keep going. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to change directions.
Later, while taking counseling classes one at a time at the University of Dayton, I applied for a graduate assistant position in the Department of Counselor Education. Getting that job felt like a dream! I earned my master’s degree in counseling in my mid-thirties, and later opened Turning Inward Counseling in 2017.
My path wasn’t quick or straightforward, but I wouldn’t change it. Every step taught me something, and the years in business gave me skills I still use today. The journey ended up being the right path.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth or linear road. Like many, I’ve had my own personal and mental health struggles along the way. I wouldn’t have chosen those experiences, but looking back, I can see they were part of what shaped me into the therapist I am today.
Therapists don’t need to have perfect lives to be effective. In fact, having our own lived experiences helps us better understand what it’s like to struggle, heal, and keep moving forward. The struggles I’ve gone through help me relate to the people I’m so honored to work with at Turning Inward.
We’ve been impressed with Turning Inward, LLC , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Turning Inward is a private counseling practice where I work with adults throughout Ohio. I help people navigate anxiety, grief, life transitions, stress, depression, and the effects of past experiences that continue to impact their lives today. My goal is to create a space where people feel safe, heard, and accepted without judgment.
One of the things that sets my practice apart is that I intentionally remain a self-pay practice rather than accepting insurance. That allows therapy to be guided by my clients’ goals instead of insurance requirements, and it gives us more freedom to focus on what is most important to them. I also accept HSA and FSA cards, which many don’t realize can be used for counseling.
I’m probably best known for my calm, gentle approach. I want people to feel like they can come as they are, whether they’re navigating a difficult season, feeling overwhelmed, or simply wanting to understand themselves better.
I’m most proud that Turning Inward reflects who I am. From the peaceful office environment and the way I work with clients, I’ve tried to create a place that encourages people to slow down, become more aware of themselves, and discover that they already have many of the strengths they need within them. It’s a privilege to walk alongside people as they heal, grow, and create lives that feel more authentic and meaningful.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me success is living a life of contentment: doing work I feel called to do, living minimally, having time with supportive others, engaging in community, and striving to live healthily as I grow older.
