Exploring Life & Business with Tonya Scott of Taxin’ Times

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Scott.

Hi Tonya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to be in the financial industry. I thought it would be accounting, but my path didn’t lead there very quickly. I have worked a plethora of jobs, and have enjoyed aspects of all of them. Actually, I did learn a lot about businesses corporations, their internal workings, office norms, different job functions, and how to communicate with people. I am appreciative of the experiences received. I have been able to pull what I like and tailor some of my mannerisms in how I conduct business.

Later, just as most of us taxpayers, I went to a “big name” preparation company to file my taxes. The preparer asked if I would like to learn how to do taxes (of course to build their employee body which is kinda genius)? Once I realized my refund outcome and the costs that made my mouth dropped, I am glad I answered YES to her question. Then a few months later I received correspondence in the mail about the tax classes starting. I attended and really enjoyed what I was learning. I initially wanted to just learn for myself, however, they offered me a job. I worked for 6 seasons and was lucky to be in an office with some very knowledgeable people.

The last year myself and another lady got together to discuss other options… we were in our twenties, had 3 boys, had so much in common, that we talked and researched and ended up starting our own firm with five employees! We were together for three years as a partnership. Again, a magnificent learning experience (to pull the good out-we could not have started without each other). It was my first jump into running a business.

Fast-forward about 15 years to today. I started Taxin’ Times (dropped the G because I am country). The name resonates with time, with the world, with the economy, with life as things can be hard or a little taxing sometimes. Over the era as a sole proprietor the company has grown substantially, mainly through word-of-mouth, starting with 1 client and growing to over 800, is very humbling. Taxin’ Times has implemented out-of-the-box strategies to be as flexible as possible to accommodate the clients; i.e., non-bankers’ hours, weekends, snacks and drinks to make it less stressful, and definitely a niche on virtual preparation the last 14 years. We do individual, and business taxes on the federal, state, and local levels. We are an authorized e-file provider across the US (can even add Japan to the list for a US citizen claiming international status). I take pride in build a rapport with my clients. Some I have seen their children grow up as they have mine. Although we have contact about once per year it is very meaningful in general and also depending the outcome can be life-changing in some respects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, some potholes along the way, but have definitely will try and find a way to swerve around them! Being an entrepreneur is hard. Being a sole proprietor is even harder. I love every aspect about it but it is difficult to wear all of the hats. That has been a struggle for me to let go or delegate, but also because of this industry, and personal information I am very protective of it. My clients have put so much trust in me, I do my best to work for them to get the best possible outcome and protect their information. I realize, their whole lives are right in front of me and I do not take that for granted. The bumpy road consists of days without sleeping or eating to meet deadlines, my skin breaks out, my nose bleeds, weight fluctuates, and I become a ghost to my family and friends (literally blood, sweat, and tears during tax season). I do not regret any of it, I am working on implementing changes little by little. It is those humps, curves, and rocks in the road that you learn and gain strength from.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Taxin’ Times?
Have amended and corrected many returns submitted by CPAs to the delight of our clients. We have a network of bookkeepers, tax attorneys, financial advisors, and payroll companies, to support our clientele. Whether is it email, fax, text, DM, snail mail, mobile, or in-person we will take care of you!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Fortunately, taxes have been pretty consistent and only two things in life are certain, taxes being one of them! However, in the next 5-10 years, I forecast a big growth in virtual currency. The world is changing to a cashless society in how we pay for items and how we get paid for work performed. The government is finally catching up. With the creation of the Bitcoin era, the government will want to regulate it, so take heed!
