Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Tucker.
Hi Tamika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion to create positive t-shirts started years ago when I walked into a local mall with the desire to buy a cute t-shirt. I was going to wear a casual t-shirt and dress it up with skinny jeans and stilettos! Frustrated that I could not find a single shirt with something positive on it, I went home disappointed. I refused to wear something negative because I realized that words are powerful, and we can speak our destiny into existence, good or bad. I made my own shirt with some puff paint and a $4 shirt from Walmart. The shirt said Beauty on it. I started researching how I could print shirts for myself that had positive sayings on them. I thought, wait, if I’m looking for positive shirts, I’m sure other people are too. It was then that I decided that not only was I going to create positive tees for myself, but I was also going to share the fabulous positivity with the entire world, and Posilive was born! The rest is history!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I took this company from a hobby and made a legitimate business out of it, but it has not been a smooth road. I first launched in 2009 and released tees from that point until 2015. In 2015, the company that did my web hosting decided that they were no longer going to do web hosting anymore. They transferred all of my information to a wix site where I should have been able to manage the website myself. That was a fail. I knew nothing about wix and became so discouraged. At the same time, I was dealing with a lot of life changes that pushed my company more and more to the background. I decided to focus on everything that was going on in my life and put the company to the side at that time. Friends and family always asked when I was going to start releasing t-shirts again, and I would always put it off. Until I was accepted into a program at The University of Houston called SURE for entrepreneurs. The program taught entrepreneurs all of the skills needed for how to run a business properly. The program was the boost I needed to start the t-shirt lineup again, but even after that, I had to build up enough courage to launch the company again.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Posilive Tees is all about encouraging people to live a better life with a more positive mindset, ridding themselves of drama, toxicity, and negativity. The t-shirts are what we use to spread positivity. We want to inspire people to live their best lives! We specialize in high-quality, well-fitting t-shirts that last. What sets us apart from others is that our designs are inspired by something I need to remind myself of or something that people I know may need to be reminded of. You know how song writers are usually inspired by their own lives or watching the lives of people around them? It’s the same with these t-shirts. We’re looking for the right words to encourage people that things do get better if we focus on the positive. For instance, our most recent tee, Protect Your Peace, was created from this overwhelming desire I have to lead a more peaceful, drama-free life. I’ve gone through periods in my life when my mind is consumed by so much negativity and I’ve let people and circumstances disburb my peace. I wanted my control back! I know others need to protect their peace as well.
I’m most proud that each time someone wears one of our tees, there are even more people seeing them in it, reading it, and hopefully being inspired. We offer tees for men and women in sizes Small – 2XL. Some sizes also come in XS and 3XL.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
To be totally transparent, I’m not a risk taker. It scares me! LOL! I’m more of a rule follower and stay-in-the-lines type of person. I do feel that people who take risks are amazing. The strength that it takes to see something that you want and go after it, even though you may or may not fail is awesome! I am inspired by the risk takers. I am more calculated and strategic. I will think of an idea and then plan and plan and plan for that idea ad nauseum. Sometimes it takes me so long to get something started because I have thought and re-thought of it too much. I definitely would like to take more risks.
