Exploring Life & Business with Sheridan Seitz of Bloom Therapy Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheridan Seitz.

Hi Sheridan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since early high school, I knew I wanted to be an occupational therapist. I went to Ohio State and studied psychology and disability studies before going to occupational therapy school in Nashville, Tennessee at Belmont University. After graduating from Belmont, I stayed in Nashville and worked at a local hospital there in a hybrid role working with people of all ages and learning a lot as a new therapist. I also had the unique opportunity to travel to Neply, Haiti multiple times to provide medical care and therapy to children there with special needs. In 2021, I moved back to Ohio to be closer to family and took a job in an entirely new setting, home healthcare. I really enjoyed the independence and flexibility of Home Health, but missed working with pediatrics, which was a large amount of my caseload in Nashville. I began thinking about how I could blend pediatrics and Home Health in a nontraditional way. I came across a post from a friend who mentioned a lactation consultant had visited her home shortly after her baby was born, and I dove into the long process of becoming a lactation consultant. I quickly learned how this overlaps perfectly with occupational therapy and the impact I could have in this role. I started taking a lot of educational courses in the infant space which led me to start my own private practice, Bloom Therapy Co. and I have been serving families in the Columbus area via both in-home and in clinic appointments for the past year and a half. Last week, I also finally recently sat for my International board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) exam after starting that process almost 2 years ago.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Without having a background in business, I have definitely learned a lot about how to create and run my own company from scratch. I have made some mistakes along the way, but have met and learned from many incredible mentors in this space. Because my business is still in such early stages, I could not quit my full-time job and lose my consistent salary or benefits and jump into my business full-time yet, so throughout this process, I have also remained working full-time and have spent much of my time outside of the normal workday on nights and weekends working on improving Bloom. This has not been easy, but I am confident it will set me up for success in the future!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bloom is a private practice in the Columbus, Ohio area, focusing on infant feeding and development throughout the first year of life. Many parents receive overwhelming or conflicting advice from doctors, nurses, or lactation consultants in the hospital that do not align with their family goals or do not fit their lifestyle when they get home with their new baby and settled into a routine. I specialize in answering parents questions about their baby in order for them to feel more comfortable and thrive in their new environment. My services focus on demystifying milestones, bodywork to decrease restriction and fascial tension, and best practices for feeding both breast or bottle.

Something that sets me apart from others is my training in Craniosacral Fascial Therapy, or CFT, a bodywork method developed by Dr. Barry Gillespie. There are only a few practitioners in Ohio who are trained in this method so often people seek out my services for this modality in particular. It is an amazing, gentle, therapeutic treatment that helps babies (and older children and adults) unwind in order to address a variety of pain or issues they may be experiencing. I offer CFT services for people of all ages.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned the importance of staying up-to-date with current research in order to offer my clients the most effective solutions for the challenges they are experiencing, but I have also learned that in order to make a lasting impact you have to meet families where they are and provide realistic, practical recommendations that will fit within their lifestyle.

Pricing:

  • 1 hour CFT session (any age) $129
  • 1 hour developmental OT evaluation/session $129
  • 1 hour feeding consult $129
