Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Watts.
Hi Samantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Split Leaf Co. started back in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. At the time, I was a single mom, fresh out of the Army, going to college, and learning how to navigate life with PTSD. Plants became my unexpected therapy. I started with succulents (after killing just about every plant before then) and slowly learned from each mistake. What began as a small hobby turned into a big passion.
I started selling plants out of my parents’ basement and then opened my first little studio inside the Morrow Arts Center in Morrow, Ohio. Over the next three years, I shared my love of plants with others through markets, workshops, and connecting with other plant enthusiasts. My daughter has grown alongside the business, often jumping in to help answer questions or assist during events.
Now, The Split Leaf Co. has grown into its own space in Loveland, Ohio where we will continue to grow!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy. Like a lot of small business owners, I’ve struggled with juggling all the responsibilities — running a business, battling imposter syndrome and anxiety, and trying to be a present, engaged mom. Some days are harder than others, but I keep showing up, learning, and growing the best I can. I’m always trying to expand my plant knowledge and love being able to share that excitement with others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At The Split Leaf Co., we’re all about houseplants. We’ve got a fun variety of unique plants, terrariums, moss art, and planty gifts. Every month, we host hands-on workshops like Kokedama and Moss Walls, you can jump into. People can book a private a workshop as well, whenever works for them.
We also offer repotting services, one-on-one plant consultations, and ongoing plant care and installations for local businesses, restaurants, and office spaces.
What I’m most proud of is that our services are truly for everyone. My passion for plants helped me heal through PTSD, and now I get to share that joy with others. Our workshops can be tailored to fit any age, ability, or budget — and I’ve had the honor of working with all kinds of groups and organizations to make sure everyone gets the chance to experience the magic of getting our hands a little dirty.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If there’s one quality I think matters most, it’s just showing up. Even on the hard days. I’m always learning, growing, and doing my best to keep getting better and better.
