Hi Mya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Throughout my life, I’ve been surrounded by makeup. My mom was a makeup artist at one point, and my cousin was passionate about it—she did her makeup often and even started creating content. Inspired by them, I began practicing on myself in college. For every event or function, I would do my own makeup, drawing inspiration from YouTube tutorials. Over time, my friends started asking me to do theirs, and one day, they encouraged me to start offering my services to others. My first official client was in college for a birthday occasion, and after receiving a great review, I gained the confidence to keep going. Wanting to refine my skills, I trained under master makeup artist Alishia Sparks, which helped me transition into specializing in weddings, fashion shows, and media production. Two years ago, I worked on my first film project, and since then, I’ve been consistently growing my clientele and advancing in my beauty career. I’m excited for what’s next!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, my journey in the makeup industry has been smooth, but there have definitely been some bumps along the way—especially when it comes to building clientele. At times, I’ve had to remind myself that while in-person marketing is valuable, we live in a very social media-driven world. Consistency online plays a huge role in attracting clients, and that’s something I’ve been working on improving. Over time, I’ve become more intentional about posting regularly and showcasing my work, which has helped me grow. I’m also constantly learning new skills and perfecting different looks to elevate my artistry even further.
