Exploring Life & Business with Missy Baker of Soul to Style

Today we’d like to introduce you to Missy Baker.

Hi Missy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! Thanks for having me. I’m Missy and I am a personal stylist, but even more than that, I believe so deeply in self-expression. I want to help create a world where women feel safe expressing who they are and I help them facilitate that through personal style. My story plays into why this is so important for me and so I’ll share a little bit of my history.

After a 10-year career in manufacturing as an engineer, I found myself in a place where I was no longer happy in what I was doing. With an 18-month-old daughter at home, I transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom. I also knew, even then, that I needed to find a new way to create and I wanted to serve people. I didn’t know what that would look like at the time. In the beginning of 2020, I enrolled myself in a Stylist Certification program for Heart-Centered Stylists. Little did I know what a journey that one decision would lead me on. Not only did I learn the basics of styling from a heart-centered perspective and the basics to get started in entrepreneurship, but I also set myself on my own journey of self-discovery and healing. Using the same methods that I now use with my clients, I discovered more about who I am beyond the titles of mom, daughter, wife. I learned to love my body and feel confident in my own skin (something I did not think was possible). It is my greatest joy to see other women being able to do the same through the work we do together. There is no greater gift you can give yourself than stopping the war you have with yourself in your mind.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! Ha! But that’s ok, because that is life. This road has not been without challenges. I did not know when I entered the journey of entrepreneurship that I would also be embarking on a path of so much growth for myself. As I was getting started, I realized that I could only truly lead others to gain more confidence and acceptance for themselves, if I did that for myself as well. When I was just starting my business, I was still using fashion as a way to gain external approval, but I didn’t have that internal confidence.  I would frequently get complimented on my style, but internally would think the person was just being nice, not really meaning what they had said.  I had to find my own inner approval first. I have learned how to quiet the negative voices in my head that try to tell me that I’m not good enough. And while they are still there, and always will be to an extent, I can now face those voices and know they are not the truth. The more I grow and heal, the more I can help my current and future clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Soul to Style?
At its core, Soul to Style is a personal styling business but I use a very different approach than a traditional stylist. I want to help you discover your own personal style, from the inside out. To do that, I guide you on a journey to discover who you are and who you desire to be. This can take us through working on body image, and self-acceptance and overall feelings of worthiness. We break down the rules and beliefs that are holding you back from fully stepping into self-expression. Why do I do it this way? I could easily style you and tell you what you should wear, but if it doesn’t feel like you or you don’t have the confidence you need, those clothes will sit in the back of your closet, unworn. I want to help you make a lasting change not only in your personal style but in how you feel about yourself. If this sounds like something you need in your life, there are a variety of ways to work with me. I work with clients in a one-on-one private setting (including virtual and in-person options) and I also host small group programs and stand-alone classes and workshops.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had so many supportive people that have helped me get to where I am today. First of all, my husband, Rob, has supported me every step of the way. Without his support to follow my dreams and passions, I wouldn’t be here. I also have to thank Elissa Williams. She is the creator of the School of Heart-Centered Styling and it is through her vision that I received the training that helped me to create my business and my approach to styling. I also work with a fantastic intuitive life and business coach, Courtney Van Atta, who has helped me tremendously along my own healing journey.   There are countless others that have supported and encouraged me along the way and I’m truly grateful for all the wonderful people that have crossed my path over the years.
