Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsalis Clay
Hi Marsalis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my painting my painting business back in January of 2019. At the time I was working as a CNC Machinist in Solon. Once I learn how to paint back when I was 18 it was something that came natural. But of course the only way to be great at something is to be consistent with it. Even while working as a machinist I still painted on the side. I’ve always had the thought that if I could learn the business aspect of painting, I could really do something special and different with my work career. So after maybe a year of listen to Nipsey I just locked in. Once I seen how busy I was getting I was like.. ok I can do this for a living. Between learning customer relations, marketing, content creating, money and etc. I had my work cut out for me. But I stayed determined and even stayed busy during Covid. It hasn’t all been sun shine and glory. Running a business a way of life and you to adhere to that or you won’t make it. You learn change is necessary to have success. I’m currently working on my 6th year of business and look forward to what this year has to offer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No smooth roads when you’re paving your way lol… there’s a lot to learn when running a business but the main thing in my opinion is having to constantly break yourself down and rebuild just as fast so you can continue with your journey. There’s no time to dwell in busines. You have to consistently motivate yourself, accept disappointment but not defeat. Trusting people has been a challenge. When building you can’t do it by yourself you have to lean on people. Some truly appreciate it some take advantage and just add stress. When you dream big you want the people around you to dream big too. But that’s why I’ve learned I just have change my circle to fit what I’m trying to do. Or I have to evolve my business plan in order to grow a more effective and efficient painting company. If im still here then it possible for anyone to be where they want to be.

My family. I have 5 daughters and an amazing and supportive wife. All my efforts are to show my kids there’s a different if you apply yourself. You can be a better version of yourself if you have something worth fight for. I’ve had rough patches in business and it’s the thought of back tracking that keeps me moving.
