Exploring Life & Business with Latresha Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latresha Scott.

Hi Latresha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I entered the health field in 2005 and worked as a state-tested nursing assistant for four years while I completed the Practical Nursing program. In 2009, I became a License Practical Nurse. I wanted more opportunities in nursing and knew my ultimate goal was to become a Nurse Practitioner. I became a Registered Nurse in 2013. During the same year, I found out I was pregnant with twins. I was so nervous and scared about becoming a mother. I didn’t know what to expect.

Little did I knowI would endure some trials and tribulations as I entered motherhood. I unexpectedly became a single mother and was forced to raise my children without the presence of their father. Despite the challenges I faced as a parent I didn’t give up on my goals and dreams. I stayed focused, continued to expand my knowledge in different areas, and worked endless hours to support myself and my children. I purchased my first home in 2013. I was so excited because I was the first in my family to purchase a home. I furthered my education and received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honors “Magna Cum Laude” in 2015. Two years later, I became a full-time entrepreneur and opened “Skilled Nursing Academy LLC” which is tailored to healthcare and childcare courses. I love teaching and helping others in need. In 2020, I started a licensed group home for adults with mental illness.

Throughout my busy lifestyle, I have managed to host a coat drive within my community sponsored by different small businesses for the past four years. During the pandemic, I completed multiple deployment assignments in Texas. Having to be away from my children was by far the hardest task I have ever done as they are the reason for everything I do. I am grateful and blessed to enjoy all the fruits of my labor all the tears, disappointments and sacrifices were all worth it. Today, I still teach courses at the training center, own multiple real estate properties, and am excited to embark on my new journey as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been an easy road on this journey. I never expected to be a single mother I faced a lot of challenges, and sleepless nights. I can recall battling postpartum depression and feeling overwhelmed. With the support of my family and God, I pulled through some tough situations.

I have been discriminated against in the workplace and even while pursuing my degrees in nursing. The business has not always been great, especially during the pandemic. I had some great losses in my family over the years from losing my paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, and my father. Nothing has ever been easy or given to me I work extremely hard and endured some pain to live the life I live today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Skilled Nursing Academy is a training center for healthcare and childcare courses. Courage House I, II is a licensed group home for the homeless, veterans, and the mental health population.

I am most proud of the group home because I am able to provide shelter and do what I love most within the business and that is nursing.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I learned to always be teachable, be open to collaborating with other like-minded individuals, and ask for assistance when I need it to avoid feelings of overwhelmedness and burnout.
