Today we’d like to introduce you to Kacey Springhart.
Hi Kacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had a creative side. When I was younger, my Barbies moved a lot based on their demanding jobs, so I needed to re-design their homes every 25 minutes. I had a failed attempt at selling my artwork door to door. But my greatest triumph was putting on plays in my backyard. We had an actual curtain, refreshments during intermission, and some pretty good marketing tactics (poster board on the back of the station wagon).
In high school, I was consumed by acting, music, and the visual arts. In college, I was a double major in communications and acting. After college, I worked in advertising and eventually got my MBA — but I never lost my love of anything creative.
Like most self-taught designers, I put a lot of time and effort into my first home. I started to get asked for design advice until finally, friends suggested I do it for some spending money.
8 years later, I’m growing double-digits yearly and taking on some incredible projects. And this summer, I will receive my accreditation from the New York Institute of Art and Design.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are probably two sides to this question. One side is the constant pressure of imposter syndrome. Feeling like a phony who had no idea what she was doing. This impacted a lot of my work with worry and doubt. The second part is just understanding the complexity of the business side of things. One wrong measurement or product order can result in a pretty hefty dent in any profit you’ve made.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about K WILSON DESIGN LLC?
KWD is a small design firm focused on the ‘every mom.’ We know she is insanely busy and demands FORM and FUNCTION. Her home has to feel soothing while also ensuring organization and efficiency.
The KWD clients are willing to invest in their homes, but within a reasonable budget (hello club soccer, orthodontia, and college!). KWD helps by focusing on a high/low approach and investing more resources in classic timeless pieces that demand a higher level of quality. We love to repurpose existing items in a fun and unexpected way. One of our best compliments was from a husband who said – “wow, I usually don’t care about any of this stuff, but THIS is amazing!”
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Honesty, transparency, listening, and excellent customer service.
