Today we’d like to introduce you to Julianna Williams.
Hi Julianna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Vines Bakery is a small batch artisan operation that got its start when I finally listened to my heart instead of my head. It started as a daydream while I pursued my education degree from Ashland University. Upon graduation, I realized my passion for teaching slipped away and I was left with no plan B.
Slowly, I began the journey of rediscovering my childhood love of baking and my passion for hospitality. After endless encouragement from a variety of sources, I took a leap of faith. I started at the Ashland farmers market with a simple scone in 2016 and the rest is history. We’ve had a small staff of incredible people come alongside our little business. Each of their unique gifts and talents have helped Vines grow into what it is today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m sure every small business owner has their own story of the bumpy road they’ve traveled on their business journey. Just as in life, there are blissful days and challenging ones. Initially the construction we planned for our little brick building far exceeded our budget. We had to reimagine everything and launch a Kickstarter campaign so the community could help us get started. From there, we’ve had bumps along the road with equipment challenges, facility limitations, and the personal stress that comes with being the sole proprietor of a business at the age of 24. In the end, each challenge allowed us to grow into where we are today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Vines Bakery is a small batch bakery business serving locally roasted coffee in a cozy brick house. Vines has always been about more than some baked goods and quality coffee. A brick-and-mortar Vines Bakery means a chance to connect, encourage, and celebrate with our community. We’ve dreamt that people can grow like vines by sharing stories while intertwining hearts and coming together inside our quaint, little house. Our customer favorites include our weekly rotating menu of scones, cookie sandwiches, shortbread, French macarons, muffins, and more.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
It seems like all of my earliest memories are grounded in food or around the table. My sister and I always loved to spend in the kitchen with my mom. We’d decorate Christmas cookies, ice birthday cakes with our grandma, dye Easter eggs, or even host our own cooking competitions with our neighbor friends. Suspiciously our competitions always ended in a tie after our parents voted!
