Exploring Life & Business with Jordan & Cassie Busse of J Busse Woodworking

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan & Cassie Busse.

Hi Jordan & Cassie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I (Jordan) began building furniture as a hobby in 2015. After 6 years of building furniture in a shop at my parent’s farm, my wife, Cassie, and I purchased a building in downtown Lawrenceburg to use as a showroom and workshop. We both quit our full-time careers. I was a nurse in the ICU at local Cincinnati hospitals, and Cassie was a 5th-grade teacher in our hometown. After seven long months of renovations on our 150-year-old building, we opened our storefront in November of 2021. Our showroom is filled with quality-made wood furniture, cutting boards, pottery, and other home décor. Everything that is sold here has been created by us. We are involved in every step of the building process. I mill and dry the lumber at our family farm, then bring it down to the woodshop that is in the back of the storefront. There, I turn it into custom-ordered pieces as well as furniture that can be purchased from the storefront. Cassie also has a pottery studio at the store where she throws, glazes, and fires all of the pottery that we sell.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There has definitely been some bumps. We went from having steady careers and 2 paychecks, to having no income for the seven months we were working on our storefront. The building we purchased was a fixer-upper. We gutted a 5,200-square-foot building. I laid 2,200 square foot of hardwood flooring for the showroom, vaulted the ceilings in the back half of the building, and rewired and insulated the entire woodshop. Once we were done with the inside of the building, we had to get to work creating furniture and other products that we would sell in the showroom when we opened. Learning how to run a business has also had its own challenges since neither of us had any prior experience doing so.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a husband and wife owned and operated small business. We build custom furniture and are involved in the process every step of the way, from tree to table. Our purpose is to help people create a living space that feels like home. We believe offering one-of-a-kind, durable, on-trend, yet timeless home furnishings is key to helping customers create their unique living space. The thing that we are most proud of is that we only sell items that we have created here. Because of that, each item we sell is one of a kind. It’s a great feeling knowing that we have pieces of our furniture and pottery scattered throughout the United States.

What sets us apart is that everything we do is custom. A client comes to us with an idea, and we work with them to design a piece that will fit their home. No one is ordering from a catalog here.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Communication When it comes to creating custom home furnishings, communication with customers comes first, enabling us to create one-of-a-kind pieces while fostering customer relationships.

Community

We believe that community is an extension of “home” that goes outside the walls of your living space. We seek out community involvement and support our community by sourcing materials and labor locally as often as we possibly can.

Craftsmanship

We take pride in our exceptional craftsmanship, creating products that will stand the test of time and keep customers coming back.

Unique Experience

We create a shopping experience unlike any other in our local community. We do this by giving our customers not only the option to shop a showroom floor but also have a hand in the creation of their own custom piece.

Social Consciousness

We believe in supporting and participating in positive change within our community and the world at whatever capacity we can, big or small.
