Today we’d like to introduce you to James And Lynne Mowery.
Hi James and Lynne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story starts well before Fifty5 Rivers. We have been partners in life and business since the mid-90s, and between us our backgrounds cover a lot of ground. Lynne worked as a child therapist and later as a sales consultant, and she has a gift for listening to people and understanding what they actually need. James spent more than two decades in franchising, technology, and operations, working with brands across many industries as an executive and a Certified Franchise Executive, and his early experiences with youth leadership programs shaped how he thinks about communication and helping people grow.
Along the way, we built and ran several businesses together, including Pet Butler of Dayton, learning firsthand what it takes to start something from nothing, grow it, and eventually hand it off. Those years taught us resilience, resourcefulness, and how much we enjoy working side by side. Through all of it, we kept coming back to the same idea: we wanted to create something that was fully ours, built around products we believed in and the kind of personal connection with customers that makes the work feel meaningful.
Fifty5 Rivers began as a shared passion and a desire to create something of our own that brought people together. The name was intentional. Rivers adapt, persist, and keep moving forward, and those are the qualities we wanted at the center of the business. What started with cold brew coffee has gradually grown into a family of connected brands, products, and experiences.
From the beginning, we wanted to do more than simply sell coffee. We focused on developing distinctive cold brew blends and creating beverages that people could enjoy in different ways. Over time, our product line expanded beyond cold brew coffee to include Riverade lemonade, River Chilled Tea, and River Rations freeze-dried snacks. We have continued experimenting, learning, and finding new ways to make our products memorable.
One of the biggest steps in our growth was launching Fifty5 Rivers BARge, our premium food truck and beverage trailer. It allowed us to take our drinks directly into the community and meet customers at festivals, businesses, private events, and community gatherings. The BARge helped people experience the brand in a much more personal way and gave us valuable insight into what our customers enjoyed.
We later opened Conflooence by Fifty5 Rivers in Fairborn, a small grab-and-go coffee shop with limited hours that brings our brands together in one location. Conflooence gave customers a place to discover our beverages, River Rations, coffee beans, merchandise, and other products outside of events.
Like many small-business owners, we have had to learn how to do a little bit of everything. We have developed products, built equipment and processes, created packaging, worked events, managed websites and technology, handled customer service, and adapted when plans did not work as expected. Many of our best ideas have come from listening to customers and being willing to try something new.
Today, Fifty5 Rivers continues to grow, and the journey has not followed a perfectly straight path, but that is part of what has made it meaningful. Each stage has helped shape what Fifty5 Rivers is today: a locally built, family-owned business centered on creative products, personal service, and bringing people together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been smooth? Not exactly. But then again, we named the business after rivers, not lakes. Like the rivers that inspired our name, our journey has had calm stretches, strong currents, and more than a few unexpected rapids, and many of them required us to learn as we went.
One of the biggest struggles has been balancing growth with limited time and resources. As a family-owned business, we wear many different hats. We are involved in product development, production, packaging, events, customer service, equipment, technology, marketing, and the day-to-day details that keep everything moving. Learning how to prioritize while still maintaining the quality and personal service we want to provide has been an ongoing process.
We have also had to build many of our own systems and processes. Our business does not fit neatly into one category. We manufacture beverages and freeze-dried products, operate Fifty5 Rivers BARge, run a small grab-and-go coffee shop with limited hours, and James also provides franchise and business consulting services. Each part of the business has different operational needs, equipment requirements, and customer expectations, so bringing all of those pieces together has required a lot of creativity and patience.
Events have brought some of the most memorable challenges. Weather, attendance, equipment issues, and last-minute changes can all affect the day. At one event, we even got the BARge stuck in the mud three times in one day. Moments like that are stressful when they happen, but they also become part of the story and remind you that running a business, especially a mobile one, comes with plenty of unexpected obstacles.
There have also been ideas that did not work exactly as planned. We have had to adjust products, rethink processes, change equipment, and sometimes take a different path altogether. Those moments can be frustrating, but they have also led to some of our best improvements.
The water has not always been calm, but every stretch has taught us something. We have become more resourceful, more adaptable, and more confident in what we are building. Most importantly, we have learned that, like a river, progress rarely flows in a straight line.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fifty5 Rivers?
Fifty5 Rivers is a family-owned beverage and specialty food company created by us, James and Lynne Mowery. While cold brew coffee was where we started, the business has grown into a connected family of brands and products designed around creativity, quality, and memorable customer experiences.
Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew is the manufacturing side of the business. We produce distinctive cold brew coffee blends, Riverade lemonade, and River Chilled Tea. Our cold brew lineup includes blends with different flavor profiles and caffeine levels, allowing customers to find something that fits their preferences rather than offering only one standard coffee. Our beverages can also be enjoyed in different styles, including Still, River Rushed (which is nitrogenated), and Sparkling, depending on the beverage.
Fifty5 Rivers BARge is our premium food truck and beverage trailer experience. It allows us to bring our drinks directly to festivals, businesses, community gatherings, and private events. Customers can choose from our base beverages and customize them with different flavors, creamers, and other options. Because the drinks are prepared and sealed in individual cans, customers receive something that is both personalized and convenient.
Conflooence by Fifty5 Rivers is our small grab-and-go coffee shop in Fairborn. It brings the different parts of the business together in one place, giving customers an opportunity to discover our beverages, coffee beans, River Rations, merchandise, and other products outside of events.
Fifty5 Rivers River Rations is our line of freeze-dried snacks. It began as another example of our willingness to experiment and develop products that fit naturally alongside our beverages. The line includes a variety of fun, portable snacks and can also be customized for special orders.
What sets us apart is that we are involved in nearly every part of what we offer. We develop products, manufacture beverages, create recipes, operate our mobile experience, package products, and interact directly with our customers. That connection allows us to listen closely, make improvements quickly, and create offerings that are difficult to duplicate.
We are also not afraid to experiment. Some ideas become permanent products, while others teach us what to do differently. That willingness to try something new has shaped much of the brand and helped us create combinations and experiences that customers may not find at a traditional coffee shop or beverage stand.
Brand-wise, we are most proud that each part of Fifty5 Rivers feels connected while still having its own identity. Fifty5 Rivers Cold Brew, Fifty5 Rivers BARge, River Rations, and Conflooence all serve different purposes, but they share the same commitment to creativity, personal service, and bringing people together.
We want readers to know that Fifty5 Rivers is about more than coffee. We are building a locally created family of beverages, products, and experiences. Whether someone discovers us at an event, visits Conflooence, enjoys one of our cold brew blends, tries Riverade or River Chilled Tea, or picks up a container of River Rations, we want the experience to feel welcoming, distinctive, and memorable.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Over the next five to ten years, we believe the beverage industry will continue moving toward greater choice, customization, and convenience. Customers increasingly want a drink that fits their individual preferences rather than being limited to a standard menu. That could mean choosing the base beverage, flavor, level of sweetness, whether it is creamy or non-dairy, and whether it is Still, Sparkling, or River Rushed.
We also expect cold beverages to continue expanding beyond traditional iced coffee. Cold brew coffee, refreshers, flavored teas, lemonades, sparkling beverages, and other creative combinations are becoming year-round choices rather than seasonal products. Cold brew in particular is moving from a specialty item to something people simply expect to find wherever coffee is served. The beverage itself is increasingly becoming the experience, especially as customers look for affordable ways to treat themselves and try something new.
We see that same shift at events and gatherings. More people are looking for interesting, well-crafted drinks that let them be part of the moment without alcohol, and event organizers are paying attention. We believe premium non-alcoholic beverage experiences will keep becoming a bigger part of festivals, weddings, and corporate events in the years ahead.
Health and wellness will also have a greater influence on the industry. We believe customers will continue looking for lower-sugar choices, simpler ingredients, functional benefits, and clearer information about what is in their drinks. At the same time, people still want beverages that taste good and feel like a treat. The opportunity will be finding the right balance between enjoyment, transparency, and options that meet different lifestyles.
Convenience will remain important as well. Grab-and-go service, mobile ordering, ready-to-drink packaging, and products people can enjoy at home or on the move will continue to grow. However, convenience cannot come at the expense of quality or personal connection. Customers still want to know who is making their products and feel connected to the businesses they support.
We believe that creates a real opportunity for independent and locally owned brands. Technology keeps making it more possible for businesses our size to manufacture, package, market, and sell in ways that once required a much bigger operation. Larger companies can offer scale, but smaller businesses can experiment, respond quickly, tell an authentic story, and create relationships within their communities. Customers often help shape our products through their questions, reactions, and suggestions, and we expect that kind of collaboration to become even more valuable.
For Fifty5 Rivers, many of these shifts fit naturally with how we already operate. We manufacture our own beverages, offer multiple beverage styles, create customized drinks, serve customers through Fifty5 Rivers BARge and our small grab-and-go coffee shop, and continue developing products that can be enjoyed beyond a traditional coffee shop setting. We do not know exactly what the industry will look like ten years from now, but we believe the brands that remain curious, adaptable, transparent, and connected to their customers will be the ones best positioned to grow. Whatever comes next, we plan to keep riding the current.
