Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Miller III.
Hi Edgar, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In January 2016, I began working for the Bedford Heights Service Department. Before that, I had never operated a commercial mower or done any professional landscaping. Once I started, I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed it—I’d often get so focused while mowing that I’d miss breaks or show up late for lunch. It felt natural and even therapeutic.
At the same time, as a father of four—three daughters and my youngest, a son—I was looking for a way to earn extra income to better support my family. I also saw landscaping as a potential career path after retirement. That’s when the idea for my business, Lands and Buildings, was born.
Being on the mower gives me time to think, reflect, and plan. It’s become more than just work; it’s a space for clarity and creativity. With a full-time job already in place, I’ve been able to take my time building the business—learning the market, improving my skills, and growing steadily and intentionally.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of my early challenges were related to scheduling and pricing. As a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, I’ve had to balance my business with deployments, leadership schools, and ongoing military obligations. On top of that, I manage a busy family life and have to work around unpredictable weather—so effective planning and communication are absolutely essential in how I operate and interact with my customers.
Pricing was also a learning curve, especially when I began taking on larger and more specialized jobs like flower bed installations and gutter cleanings. I had to figure out the best approach—whether to charge hourly or per job—and determine which projects made sense for me to accept. When a job isn’t the right fit, I make sure to have a trusted referral network so I can still meet my customers’ needs, even if I’m not the one doing the work.
We’ve been impressed with Lands and Buildings , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I want you to know about Lands and Buildings is that it’s not just a money-making venture—it’s built on service, trust, and genuine care for the customer. My clients always come first. While I currently run the business part-time, I keep my prices fair and affordable with the goal of easing financial pressure for my clients while still earning a modest income.
My main focus is lawn maintenance—keeping yards cut, clean, and manicured—but I also take on larger jobs from time to time. Just as important, I’ve built a reliable network of professionals in the field who offer a wide range of lawn care and landscaping services. If I can’t do the job myself, I make sure someone I trust can.
What sets me apart is the personal touch. I maintain direct communication with my clients—I call ahead, send progress photos, and work around their schedules to get the job done at a time that works for both of us. I want every customer to feel like more than just a name on a list—they’re an important part of what I do.
If there’s one thing I’d like your readers to know, it’s this: I’ve got your back. Whatever you need done, I’ll make sure it gets done—one way or another.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I don’t see the landscaping industry slowing down anytime soon—as long as the grass keeps growing, there will always be a need for this work. That said, I do believe we’re already seeing the impact of technology in the field—allowing jobs to be completed more efficiently, often with smaller crews and smarter tools.
For me, Lands and Buildings is about more than just maintaining properties. My long-term vision is to use the business as a platform to teach youth valuable skills, introduce them to entrepreneurship, and help them understand the basics of running a business. It’s a practical and meaningful way for young adults to gain work experience and begin funding their lives, goals, and futures.
