Exploring Life & Business with David Kurtz of D and M DJ Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Kurtz.

David Kurtz

Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started back in 1982 DJing professionally in a Roller-skating rink in Newington, New Hampshire, called The Great Fox. Back then, we used turntables, cassettes, and 8-track decks. Whatever the format and whatever way we could get it was how we rolled at the time. You had to constantly be on top of the music then because once a song sold out, you had to wait for some kind of collection to come out during the year to have the song. It was very challenging to stay on top of things.

As time went on, I DJed through college in Boston, MA. Then, when I graduated, I stopped until I moved to Columbus in the early 90s. I was asked to DJ at a wedding, and I agreed. That started the whole idea again, and I worked with a few different DJ companies in town and started to DJ in bars.

I have a whole history of bar work I could go into, but we can save that for another day.

As time went on, I met up with my business partner, Mark Derenberger, and we got to know one another as we both DJed in the bar world through social media.

The day finally came when I decided to start building a DJ/emcee company in 2015, and that brings us to the present day. There are a lot more details, but for the most part, that’s it so far.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle was learning about all the aspects of running a business in today’s world. From marketing and training to understanding the culture and lifestyle of the DJ business, it has not been easy. The misconceptions of what a DJ/emcee does by the average person puts us in an educational role when we are hired and what our purpose is.

Each event we do requires an understanding of what the outcome should be. From a simple Birthday party to a multi-cultural event, we have had to learn music & formalities that differ from what we know.

Working with other vendors that don’t always understand where we fit in has been a challenge, too.

The biggest takeaway is our company has learned how to be team players.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hello!

Thank you for taking a look at our exciting entertainment company. We know you have many choices when it comes to entertaining your guests, and we want to be your vendor of choice. We have added many great DJs and services that will make your event special, be the most fun guests can have, and be something they will talk about for years to come. We make sure that everything we offer is something that we not only stand behind but that you will shout from the rooftops about how much fun you will have when you book them.

My love of weddings & special events has been in my blood since grade school. This has been my life’s pursuit, you could say. When my business partner Mark Derenberger and I finally realized that this was not a one-person business, we worked together and started to see our vision become a reality. We began to understand that with a solid crew behind us that believes the way we do, the more people we could help make their day rock!

My promise to you is that we will always make your event our event. We will dedicate our time and effort to make your dream a reality! Because we work as a team, we back each other up and can say we will be there for you from when you sign the contract to the last song played on your special day! We are a customer service-oriented company and will make sure we treat you the way we would want to be treated.
